Amitabh to act in Varma's Rs 650 mn film
SUBHASH K JHA

IANS[ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 04, 2002 11:23:54 AM ]

MUMBAI: Innovative director Ram Gopal Varma will finally get to make a film with superstar Amitabh Bachchan, that too in what is poised to be Bollywood's most expensive ever.

Bachchan is to star in a Rs 650 million Bollywood-Hollywood tie-up to be directed by Varma and produced by Bharat Shah.

Varma told IANS, "Yes, Bachchan and I are finally working together. But contrary to reports in a section of the Mumbai press, the film is not called 'Bomb'."

He is currently busy directing Bhoot which he hopes to finish by January.

The film with Bachchan will also star Ajay Devgan who has worked with me in Company and is also the leading man in Bhoot. These are the only two actors who have been confirmed for the Bharat Shah project.

"I'll launch my film for Shah in June-July 2003," he said.

Varma was in Los Angeles in October meeting technicians and actors. The entire crew of the film will be from Hollywood, like Sanjay Gupta's Kaante.

Raju Patel who co-produced Kaante will be one of the project's international producers. The cast will comprise top names from both Hollywood and Bollywood.

The film's an international political thriller that will be shot in five countries, including India and Pakistan. The film's estimated Rs 650 million budget is expected to rise as the project concretises.

Varma says this will be the most expensive film ever produced in India, costlier than Bharat Shah's last production Devdas which was produced at an estimated Rs 500 million.

Bachchan confirmed the news. "Ram Gopal Varma came to meet me on Sunday to discuss the project. There'll be a final narration of the plot in January. Then the dates and other formalities have to be worked out."

:D

As much as I would love to see this film being made, something tells me that it won't and that the whole project will be abandoned before it even goes on production stages. Can Ram Gopal Verma be successful in directing big budgeted films? And accuring top names from Hollywood, I'd think this film would need far more than just Rs 650 million to do that. No top Hollywood star has ever collaborated with a Bollywood production, and I don't see it happening here either. Call me pessimistic, but this film sounds a bit too exaggerated.

Even before they start with this, this proposal is gonna get shot down .... Come on u cannot have a Bollywood film being shot in "Enemy" country :) (Unless u actually depict it as such... enuff folks back home will raise a hue and cry abt this) .. Other than that... Rs 650 Million is peanuts for a Hollywood style budget ..No hollywood heros would like to act in a Bollywood movie unless of cos.. u have someone like the Late O.P.Ralhan bringing in such Hollywood giants as... Sir Rex Harrison etc.. for Shalimar and we all know what happened to Shalimaar :)

How was OP Ralhan(may he RIP) responsible for getting Rex Harrison to star in SHALIMAR? The movie was produced and directed by Krishna Shah who was based in Hollywood hence he was able to rope in other than Harrison, John Saxon (Enter the Dragon) and Sylvia Miles (dunno her claim to fame) as well.

In any case since the topic is that of an international political thriller, it will be interesting to see developments...Nothing can be said till the film begins shooting....but knowing RGV he will do his homework and planning pretty well and he's not the frivolous sort to announce something and not get done with it....but then I remain an eternal optimist....

I read it somewhere that Krishna Shah was able to get Rex Harrison, John Saxon ( u forget... Nightmare on Elm Street (the original one) ) .. only through O.P.Ralhan's persuassion... Its another story that Rex Harrison behaved like a typical BRIT vis-a-vis Desi folks...

Bharat Shah = DVD from Eros :nervous: :ffs: :bangbang:

Rather than using Hollywood crews, why aren't Indian crews being trained better? Besides, cinematographers like Jeeva, Anil Mehta, and Santosh Sivan have been shooting great looking films for a while.

I would think that he would take Shekhar Kapoor's help to get someone to act in this film
