PARDESI RE - (Reviewed By Komal Nahta)

Director: Kewal Krishna
Producer: JSK Production
Starring: Ashutosh Rana Shama Sikander Shruti Ulfat Parikshit Sahani Sayaji Shinde Usha Nadkarni Rajpal Yadav

RATING: 0.25/10

JSK Production Pvt. Ltd.'s Pardesi Re is about Indian values. Talented singer Prabhakar (Ashutosh Rana) is invited by an NRI girl, Raagini (Shruti Ulfat), to perform at a cultural programme in London. Prabhakar, however, spurns her offer as his principles do not permit him to leave his village in India and go abroad. Besides, he tells her, he has made a promise to an old woman, who he cares for as he would for his mother, that he would never leave her and go abroad, as her son had done more than two decades ago. The son, adds Prabhakar, hadn't cared to contact her even once in all these years. Although disappointed, the girl is impressed with Prabhakar's convictions. She decides to return to London without him. But before she can do so, Prabhakar finds himself in need of a lot of money, without which he cannot get his sister married. Compromising on his principles, he goes to London with Raagini.

While in London, Prabhakar meets another NRI girl, Diya (Shama Sikander), who has been born and brought up there. The two fall in love and decide to get married. When Diya's father learns of their love, he gives his consent to their marriage. Meanwhile, Raagini, who is a close friend of Diya, also falls in love with Prabhakar. She, however, hides her feelings as she doesn't want to hurt her friend. One day, Prabhakar learns that the old woman, who he loves dearly, is counting her last days back home. He, alongwith Diya and her father, catches the first flight out of London and arrives in India. But moments before they reach, the woman has passed away. Diya's father is shocked when he sees the corpse of the woman - it is his own mother who he had unknowingly abandoned years ago! He now decides to stay back in India.

As days pass, Diya, who had earlier agreed to settle in India after her marriage to Prabhakar, starts to have second thoughts. She pressurises Prabhakar to return to London with her, but he refuses to do so. Matters come to such a pass that Diya decides to leave him and go back to London alone. However, at the airport, she bumps into Raagini who makes her realise the sanctity of Indian values and sentiments. Her eyes thus opened, Diya returns to Ashutosh.

The story is a badly rehashed copy of Manoj Kumar's Purab Aur Pachhim. The drama looks fake due to inept handling. For instance, the fact that Prabhakar is only asked to go to London on a temporary visit - and not to settle there permanently - makes his talk of his principled stand against leaving India seem ridiculous. In fact, except for a couple of emotional scenes and dialogues, there's nothing in the story to hold the viewers' attention for long.

Ashutosh Rana acts well and delivers his lines with finesse, but it must be said that he is no hero material whatsoever. He also looks ill at ease in song-dance routines. Shama Sikander is fair. Shruti Ulfat does well. Rajpal Yadav entertains to some extent. Parikshat Sahni, Sayaji Shinde, Usha Nadkarni, Sameer Sharma, Chittaranjan Giri and others lend ordinary support.

Writer-director Kewal Krishna fails miserably in creating a moving drama. Of the songs, only the 'Nayee sadak bazar se', rendered by Ashutosh Rana himself, holds some appeal due to its earthy lyrics and folk tune. Two other songs can easily be deleted. Technical aspects are below the mark.

All said, Pardesi Re is a disaster.

Released on 29-11-'02 at Minerva and 7 other cinemas of Bombay thru RTS Films P. Ltd.

Publicity: ordinary. Opening: dull. ........Also released in Delhi, East Punjab and C.P.C.I.
