Hej (Danish for "hi"),

I'm new to this forum and also fairly new to Indian cinema, I hope all you knowledgable people here can give me a hand.

One of my favourite movie genres is the Hong Kong martial arts action movies of the 70's and early 80's and I was wondering if anything was done in India along those lines but using traditional Indian martial arts?

I've been told that Akshay Kumar (I haven't seen any of his films) does martial arts action fairly inspired by the Hong Kong movies of the late 80's and 90's. Is there anybody else?

The martial arts element is very important to me, I seldom find pure gun flix very interesting (unless of course we're talking quality like John Woo in his HK days).

I hope you can help me.

Ciao,

-Linette.- :kungfu:

closest artistes you will get in indian movies doing somewhat martial arts would be: akshay kumar, sunil shetty, ajay devgan..

Movies like:
Mohra
Main Khiladi Tu Anari
Maidan-E-Jung
Hum Se Hai Muqabla
Gaddar
Vijaypath
Waqt Humara Hai
etc..

they are a joke comparing to martial arts movies out there. As indian movies never actually dedicate the movies to such category like martial arts. Also the editing, direction, background music score just isn't done that well. no offence to anyone.

Well,

there are movies with martial arts, and a lot of them. You could check modern classics by Akshay Kumar like Mohra, Khiladiyon ka Khiladi or Barood (stealing a lot of scenes & stunts from jackie Chan movies). There is a Twin Dragons remake with salman Khan called Judwaa with some fine kung fu fights.
Also, you can check Aawara Pagal Deewana, with great & abundant kung fu scenes created by Kao Fei; Samurai, a tamil action movie; The Master, a kung fu movie made in HK with bollywood cast & crew...and some 70's movies are influenced by HK kung fu movies like Don, which feature cool fights, stunts & acrobatics.

If you really want to see a movie in which martal arts was the underlying theme then you must catch ONDAANONDU KAALADALLI (Kannada - Once Upon A Time) directed by Girish Karnad and the debut movie of Shankar Nag. It was the story of a couple of mercenaries hired to fight for warring feudal lords. Set somewhere in the 14th or 15th century Karnataka this classic draws houseful crowds whenever it is re-released. I had the fortune of catching it in Bangalore at one such instance. I believe it has been shown on DD as well.

Similar fight sequences (Kalarippayattu) were later used in UTSAV by Karnad except they were too brief.

I dont think there's a DVD available, heck not even a VHS of this movie. It was a tribute of sorts to the Kurosawa unforgettable SEVEN SAMURAI and my word it worked exceedingly well.

An absolute must watch!

PS: I am sure there are several movies in the regional languages made based on Kalaripayattu but none that I have seen(for lack of awareness about them). Others in this forum who have may please enlighten us.

The action in Mission Kashmir is great in my opinion. There are some cool fight sequences and the dvd by columbia tristar is supposed to be quite good.

what indian movies is missing is proper editing...

movies are all made up stuff.. the action the story.. bla bla.. in english movies the editing is good, the cut&paste are not noticeable.. making the action look real..

but hindi movies.. the cut&paste is very lame.. making the whole action ridiculous on top, the music is just hillarious. i still remember watching "sangdil sanam -salman khan"..

Mission Kashmir is good.. as masti man says.. well directed, well edited.

If I remember correctly the film 'Yudh', with Jackie Shroff had some martial arts in it.
There's actually a proper Indian martial arts film called believe it or not, "Karate" which was made in the early 80's starring Mithun Chakraborthy.
Akshay Kumar did a martial arts fight at the end of Keemat.

As for Kalarippayattu, Shahrukh Khan actually learnt some moves for Asoka.

Indian cinema has never produced any brilliant kung-fu/karate sequences as such. They were either poor imitations from Cantonese cinema or just plain awful work on the fight director's part.

Indian films are better known for their street fighting sequences that are quite brutal and violent in places. Some are actually well shot and (though a tad over the top) are entertaining to watch.

Indian films like RUN, GHULAM, MUDHALAVAN/NAYAK, BAAZIGAR, ANGEEPHAT, MISSION KASHMIR, VIRASAT, DHEENA & SATTE PE SATTA are small examples...

If your still looking for Indian Kung-Fu sequences then I would recommend watching films by either Rajinikant or Akshay Kumar. They are the only Indian actors that have their own style of fighting, that also incorporates some kung fu moves from the far east (but it isn't always as good). Best films with their fights are PADAYAAPA, & MOHRA, The "Khiladi" movies. (I'm sure others on this forum can give you a better list of fights with these actors)

Mithun is known to do actively perform kung-fu but they are really cheap and normally poor imatations of Rajinikant's style. His fight direction is done by Rambo Rajkumar, who is the worse fight director in India.

Personally I think Kamal Hassan would make one good Indian kung fu artist as he has trained in the martial arts that was used in India many centuries ago, and also has learned the art of the Bharat Natiyam, which is similar to Chinese opera. You can see some of his fight sequences incorporate both these skills and it is quite amazing to watch.

The film THENALI is his only recent one that features a fight sequence done by him and that was made in 2000. His fights are rare as he is not seen as an action hero, but more of an method drama actor. You can also see him fight as an old 60 year lady in the film, Chachi 420/Avai Shanmugam that is quite a cool scene!!

Actually you just made me remember that Kamal Hassan incorporated some cool-looking Kung Fu like moves in 'Hindustani'. I wonder if there is any good fighting in Abhay.

I think Akshay Kumar with a good fight choreographer can do so much better and I think he'll surprise us in Armour of God 3. He has to do well in order to be in a Jackie Chan film!

Although I know it wasn't too popular with most Indian viewers 'Tumko Na Bhool Payenge' was pretty cool and had Salman Khan performing some pretty slick moves. The only letdown was the final showdown which could have been choreographed a bit tighter, some of those kicks looked pretty sloppy. Akshay Kumar is pretty good when teamed up with a good choreographer, 'Awara Paagal Deewana' is probably the biggest and best film Kao Fei has worked on since he started making crap in the Philipines. Did Dion Lam also have a hand in on this film?

As for Kalarippayattu, I've been told the best film was 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha' starring Mammootty but I haven't seen it as it's not out on DVD. Does anyone know what is the best film available on DVD to check out this amazing art (other than 'Asoka' which was too brief)?

almost all of Akshay Kumar's movies have some decent action scenes especially in the past. he seems to have cut down on them now but not forgetting Awaara Pagal Deewana. Expect some good action scenes in his upcoming Talaash. Action is by Abbas Ali who also worked with akshay in Aankhen & Awaara Pagal Deewana.

some other akshay movies with good action scenes:

Mohra
Main Khiladi Tu Anari
Keemat
Sapoot
Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi
Khiladi420

hehehe...i cant believe someone here mentioned rajnikanth....what a blunder he is....he cant even make his leg straight when he kicks....anyways, india has made lot of movies that contains fighting....but when it comes to real martial arts fighting, you might find a little in the movies...i wouldnt say it will be all gore and stuff like you see in chinese/hong kong movies....the latest one that came out to be about martial arts was "MASTER" ....well its kinda old now, but ever since that, there hasnt been any.....see india dont specialize in martial arts, we are more into making good DRAMAS (which ofcourse comes once in a while) :) ....i could recommend you some that are good...when i was back in india, i heard Ajay Devangan knows karate in real life....his movie "Jigar", was pretty popular back in 91'....you might wana look for his movies back in the day time....Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty are also good in older movies when it comes to fighting....now everyone is making more family type, serious dramas.....anyways check out these 2 titles....
