A 2 disc dvd set of LOTR comes out today but beware. On Nov. 12 a Special Extended Edition 4 disc set of the film comes out.

The biggest draw of today's initial DVD is a never seen, 10 minute preview of The Two Towers, the trilogy's 2nd chapter, due in theaters dec 18th.

Wouldn't you rather wait for the four disc version with all sorts of special features?

well i got mine from ColumbiaHouse with no paid coupons or anything. Average cost per DVD is always around $9. Best place to grab all those high cost DVDs.

The 4-disc version has more features, but only has the extended cut, so LOTR completists will want to buy both. The 2-disc version includes a coupon for $5 off of the 4-disc set. I believe there is also a 5-disc set coming up with a National Geographic documentary on the making of FOTR.

Kplina,
I too buy dvd’s from Columbiahouse but I believe we have to wait 3 months to get a new dvd as an enrolment. Am I right? How did you get LOTR from them for $9?
I got a good deal from Bestbuy.com as I used the $10 digital Coupon from BHD and this additional $10 coupon makes it really sweat.

Well probably I will buy the 4 disk version too if the Pq is better than this version. I have watched part of the movie last night and I thought the Sound is excellent nearly demo material. It really shines and makes good use of the surrounds and Sub.
The PQ while generally good is not great as in some occasions it is soft and lacks detail. I thought there is a bit of EE also. All these artifacts are because of the use of single disk for the 3-hour movie. Remember again I am watching it on 92-inch screen, which demands more.
Overall it is better than lot of Hollywood disks out there but as I was expecting a demo quality disk I am disappointed a little bit.
My new demo disk for PQ is Training Day.

Columbia House is lately taking pre-orders on a few selected DVDs. They did it with Spy Game, Harry Porter, LOTR, Others and many more.

To get average cost per disc to low $9 follow the instruction at http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread ... did=107726

I always use 7CY accounts using my fullfiled account number that gives an extra DVD for FREE PLUS ONE less DVD to buy at 19.95. Another tip which you might be knowing is CH offers FREE shipping on 3 or more DVD orders every 6 months. I open and close max accounts during this time and never fullfil when FREE shipping ends.

Older accounts(more than 3 months) get All On Sale(AOS) offer. This will let you nail 29.95 DVDs for 19.95 and count as fullfillments. Gets sweeter to get this offer while they have free shipping.

Right now, CH is taking preorder on the following:
Spiderman
Back To The Future: The Complete Trilogy
About a Boy
All About The Benjamins Platinum Series
Amadeus
Band Of Brothers
Barbie As Rapunzel
The Scorpion King
Blade II
Panic Room
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

Kpolina,
Thank you for the informative post. Even thou I frequent Dvdtalk and know about 7CY, I have no idea about the Preorders before. Looks like a good deal.

I got mine for...FREE.
They had this promotion at Blockbuster where if you buy a $25 rental card, you would get:
10 DVD rentals over 10 weeks (a value of $40) and
LOTR DVD free when it's released

I went to my local BB yesterday, showed my card and got my copy :) .

I am waiting for the 4 disk and I might do CH for that. My latest account needs to be fullfilled. If I preorder Spider-Man and LOTR Extended, my average goes up to about 11 but I think still worth it.

worth it? It's a damn good steal assuming you got great enrollment selections.

I take back my comment about the PQ of the disk. I have finished watching this movie. While the Audio is excellent the Video is not far behind. I saw EE only on couple of occasions that too if I look hard. And the image continually sharp on most occasions. Overall it is an excellent disk. This is the best work one can expect for a 3-hour movie on a single disk. I can’t imagine how it is going to look on the 4 disk extended version.

The 4-disc set will have DTS too, won't it?
