TABU ENTERS TOLLYWOOD TOO

Tabu, a talented star of Bollywood, has now entered Tollywood too. She is acting in a Bengali film debut in Gautam Ghosh's next film 'Abar Aranye', the sequel to Satyajit Ray's 'Aranye Ek Din Raatri'. The film will be shot in Bengali and, later dubbed in Hindi. Ray's film centers around four friends on a journey into a forest by cutting through civilisation. Accompanying them is Tabu, Bangladeshi actress Champa, Jishu Sengupta and Roopa Ganguly. 'Abar Aranye' is based on a similar journey undertaken by a foreign educated Amrita (played by Tabu), She is the daughter of Soumitra and Sharmila Tagore. "The sequel begins three decades after the original story. The value system, the attitude and romanticism of Amrita and her friends are very different from the past generation. I'm using time as a metaphor for change. Hence the nature of the journey also changes", says Ghosh.

Giving the background how she entered Tollywood, Tabu says, "I had never heard Bengali until I went to Kolkatta last year to receive an award though I have done many films for the South. I am excited, as it is an opportunity for me to work with Soumitra Chatterjee and Sharmila Tagore. I could not have got a better Bengali movie than this." She is opposed to overexposure as it leads to mannerism, which people do not like. "I try to give the character my best", she adds. Tabu doesn't feel insecure. "I am what I am. I do not compare myself with others." About her next movie 'Police Force", she said, "I am doing this because the director has a special role in the movie keeping me in mind."

Does anyone here have a chance to see new Bengali movies in the theater? The Indian theater in my area only shows Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu films, and maybe the occassional Kannada film. We can't even see them on DVD. I guess the only recourse is VHS copies, which probably do not have subtitles.
