Two new releases have hit the marquee for a subsequent week. With Bollywood´s prodigies constantly disclaiming their reasons for releasing their films with others, by stating that two different genres of films will not eat into each other´s business, these past two Fridays proved testaments to the otherwise.
Bollywood is looking forward to few to no films to perhaps bring better hopes for the industry and for that matter, any small film that could prove a surprise. Kaante is the only magnus budget upcoming release, while Inder Kumar´s Rishtey, Aishwarya Rai´s Dil Ka Rishta and Yash Chopra´s Saathiyan bring the most anticipated lesser known films of the near future. Last week´s releases have officially sunk at the box office and Ram Gopal Varma´s Road is still managing a small margin of viewing, receiving collections in the 50% range in areas like Mumbai and Jaipur.
The releases this past Friday both films had something in common, however. While Hathyar was a sequel to Mahesh Manjrekar´s original underworld drama Vaastav, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar is a love story based on R.D. Burman´s evergreen classical music. These last two releases, percentages included, have not done well critically or at the turnstiles proving that a film with a familiar story and another with familiar music will more than likely produce a familiar outcome out at the box office. Please note that percentages are based on occupancy of the capacity in the theatres in the designated regions.
Film Hathyar Starring Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty, Sharad Kapoor, Namrata Shrodkar Released October 18th, 2002 Summary Mahesh Manjrekar was not only looking for the same success of Vaastav in his sequel Hathyar, but his first true success since Kurukshetra. Venus Productions had high aspirations for the film, and releasing the soundtrack a mere two weeks before, felt that promotional strategies were not going to be the reasons people went to see Hathyar. Manjrekar will obvious need to re-think his strategy for critical acclaim let alone box office success as Hathyar has not been able to garner either. The film has opened to an average response, and while this is a positive sign since most films open with flop status, the chances still seem bleak for the film. Opening collections for the film were an average 85 to 90%, but by the third a drop was noticed decreasing the percentage to at least a 75%. In Delhi, the film opened to a dismal 70%, where in the upcoming days it too dropped to a 55%. In other areas of India, the film registered approximately 60%. The film will not register much, if any, overseas business as Eros Entertainment has released the DVD as early as the Tuesday after. A limited release was reported overseas. Final Verdict While Manjrekar´s film has chances to pull average or recover its cost, as its drops have indicated, Hathyar will more than likely prove a flop at the box office.
Film Dil Vil Pyar Vyar Starring R. Madhavan, Namrata Shirodkar, Sanjay Suri, Sonali Kulkarni, Jimmy Shergill, Hrishita Bhatt, Rakesh Bapat, Bhavna Pani Released October 18th, 2002 Summary Hoping to cash in on R. D. Burman´s sentimental value, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar has had a very ordinary opening except at the metro´s and the main cities of UP. Metalight Productions have kept the production tight and the release small, but the fear of the film being a wash out at especially the small centers loom large. Despite such a big star cast, none of the stars have face value and this could be a reason for this. The young actors do leave a defile image with the audience but the effect is not for long. The music, though pricey on two audio cassettes has served the film well both outside and inside of cinema halls. In most of the cities, the film´s collections varied strictly from 60-70%. Final Verdict Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, like Hathyar, has chances to do some decent business in a few regions but overall has met with a response indicative of a flopping film.
Film Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai Starring Prashant Chianani, Aamir Ali Malik, Vaibhav Yash Raj Vir, Tarun Anand, Deepti Daryanani, Payal Rohatgi, Punar Nava and Samita Bangargi Released October 11th, 2002 Summary Entering its third week in cinemas, Hansal Mehta´s latest project has met with a disappointing response. Touts of poor promotional strategies combined with an unappealing genre specific story have not been appreciated by the audience. In the first week of cinemas, the percentages for the only four theatres showing Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai ranged from 51 % (Mumbai, equivalent of 39 lakhs), 32% (Delhi, 32 lakhs), 65% (Kolkata, 5 lakhs) and 34% (Jaipur, 1 lakh). Final Verdict The theatres showing the film are decreasing by the day. Even with a little increase, Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai is a flop.
