The scene is set for The Hero

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2002 06:57:38 PM ]

When Sunny Deol and Gadar director Anil Sharma reunite to make a film which, like Gadar, tells a tale set against the backdrop of Pakistan and terrorism, money is not an issue. So what if films are flopping left, right and centre and the industry is in a precarious position? When you are Anil Sharma, you can afford to erect sets worth Rs 1.25 crore and then, blast the set to pieces too!

The film in question is The Hero: Love Story Of A Spy, which stars Sunny (who else?), Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra. Four hundred workers dug 20 feet into the existing lake at the Film City studio last fortnight to create an all-glass dome-shaped ‘Army Club’, which is meant to be situated on the Dal Lake. But this is not the end of the story. The producers of the film —Pravin Shah, Dhirubhai Shah, Hasmukh Shah and Manu Shah — plan to erect 12 such elaborate sets in the weeks to come.

Now, what will happen at these sets? First, a song will be picturised on Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta and then, the sets will be completely destroyed when a big-blast action sequence flows into the plot. ‘‘The song being picturised on the sets is a vital link in the film and is an extension of the screenplay. It is not just a meaningless item number,’’ maintains Sharma.

Following the colossal success of Gadar, The Hero is the first film to reunite Anil Sharma and Sunny Deol. This time too, Sharma hopes to hit the jackpot. ‘‘We have returned with the same spirit and the same enthusiasm to make history,’’ says Sharma, ‘‘In fact, we have left no stone unturned to ensure that The Hero is a memorable film which will make a powerful impact on the audience.’’ (Hmmm now I wonder what that might be :D )

NEW DELHI: Expected to be released around Republic Day next year, The Hero is, quite clearly, an expensive film. ‘‘The minute we got involved with the production part of The Hero, we realised that it would be one of the most expensive films to be made in recent times,’’ offers Pravin Shah, ‘‘But we don’t mind spending on this film because we have full faith in the script.’’ Faith works wonders no doubt. Unfortunately, the box-office follows its own script.
