London, Oct 19
The Bollywood summer in Britain is finally drawing to a close with the arrival of film star Aishwarya Rai in Birmingham next month.
The Bollywood beauty will address the audience at the Birmingham International Festival on November 22, sources said.
The Oscar-nominated film 'Lagaan' will also be screened at the venue along with a discussion with its lead star Aamir Khan to mark the end of the Bollywood season under the 'ImagineAsia' launched by the British Film Institute (BFI).
During its summer-long celebration of South Asian films, the BFI conducted a poll on the best ten films. The film to top the list was Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay', followed by Satyajit Ray's 'Pather Panchali'.
The list also included film classics such as 'Mother India', 'Charulata', 'Meghe Dhaka Tara', 'Mughal-e-Azam', 'Amma Ariyan', and 'Awara.'
Indian films were found to be the most popular among South Asian films, as a result, a list of the next 10 included, 'Kagaz ke Phool', 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Baiju Bawra', 'Bombay', 'Do Bigha Zameen', 'Lagaan', 'Guide', 'Deewar', 'Amar Akbar Antony' and 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaron.'
To mark the celebrations, the BFI also held a short film competition for South Asian filmmakers between the age of 15 and 30.
The subject given to the competitors was Britain. The winner of the competition was Sandhya Suri for the short film 'Safar', based on culture conflict faced by her parents in Britain.
The film was screened at the Nehru Centre yesterday. The second prize went to Anjali Nair for her film 'Black Nor White.' A book on Shyam Benegal by Sangeeta Datta, published by the BFI in its World Directors Series, was released by High Commissioner Ronen Sen at Nehru Centre, sources added
