With the holiday season up and around in India, the turn out for recent films is nowhere near that of which would have the industry jumping for joy. There is however, no surprise in this as it has been this way for quite some time now. In fact, the last truly successful film was Shashilal Nair´s Ek Chottisi Love Story which was released in a limited amount of theatres. Three big films are still being spoken about in the market, Ram Gopal Varma´s Road, and last week´s two releases Ramesh Sharma´s Pyaasa and Harry Baweja´s Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai.
Here are somewhat dismal outcomes:
Film Road Starring Vivek Oberoi, Manoj Bajpai, Antara Mali Released September 27th, 2002 Summary Road was sold for prices ranging from .75 crores to 1 crores in the 6 territories of India. The 1 crore sales were for the more popular ´hot territories´ of India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Maharashtra and part Central India. Road grossed 4.5 crores in its 1st week and 2.1 crores in the 2nd week. These are its total collections thus far. As predicted earlier on on Planet Bollywood, the film´s best business has come from the South. In the overseas market, Road was released by a growing overseas distributor. Media Partners, who had last released Kuch Tum Kaho Kuch Hum Kahein had promoted the film well and it has helped. The film has grossed 107,000$ in the first week and the projected final gross is $135,000. Final Verdict Road is certainly not a big flop. The film is above average in the south, overflow in Mumbai territory and cost coverage in Delhi-Up. The film is not a complete success however, as it is termed as losing in the remaining three territories.
Film Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai Starring Prashant Chianani, Aamir Ali Malik, Vaibhav Yash Raj Vir, Tarun Anand, Deepti Daryanani, Payal Rohatgi, Punar Nava and Samita Bangargi Released October 11th, 2002 Summary It would of course prove detrimental to sell no star films at high prices. But Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai has been sold at a uniquely low distribution price, reportedly close to a half crore in some territories. It has opened reasonably in metros like Mumbai, Delhi and also in big cities like Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Lucknow with first day collections as high as 75-80% in some of the above mentioned cities. However, from Monday onwards there was a noticeable to drastic fall. The movie is a total washout in the interiors, due to the absence of any saleable stars. The only thing in its favor is that the low price may minimize the losses for the distributors, but a loss it will be in most places for the distributors. Final Verdict While the film has just released, it will take much more than being witnessed now to save the film from flopping.
Film Pyaasa Starring Aftab Shivdasani, Yuktha Mukhi, Zulfi Sayed Released October 11th, 2002 Summary After almost a year, popular model turn actress Yuktha Mukhi will have to wait some time more before being noticed. A poor film has met with a poor response. Even though it was released to limited territories, the film is still a disaster. Being released solely in Bombay, Rajasthan, Nizam and and a few southern cities, the film failed to get released at an all India level. It has got dismally low collections of at or around 20% in the few places that it was released. In many of the circuits the distributors refused to take the delivery of the prints and preferred to forego their security deposits rather than incur a bigger loss by releasing the movie. Final Verdict While the film has just released, and it is usually averted to a two week period to decide the final fate of a film, Pyaasa has been declared a flop. http://www.planetbollywood.com/BoxOffic ... 010624.php
