Hello,

I have an 11 year old son, and we watch some films with him, and some after he has gone to bed. :)

He has seen Lagaan, Asoka, and DDLJ (and enjoyed all three).

Amazingly enough, Monsoon Wedding is going to be shown here in about 10 days in the local theatre as part of an "international film festival" ; and my Devdas DVD will arrive later this week (hopefully).

I'm wondering if either film is inappropriate for him - either having scenes that are too "adult" (I'm remembering Nair's earlier "Kama Sutra") or else "over the head" of an 11 year old (an example of that would be a BBC drama, which would be boring and incomprehensible to an 11 year old).

I ask because I avoid reading plot details of films that I have not yet seen.

Thanks!

Monsoon Wedding is rated:

MPAA RATING
R, language, including some sex-related dialogue

at Rotten Tomatoes

Devdas, should be okay as long as you are okay with the whole lot of alcoholism shown in the movie. Kids probably cannot identify with the characters as it is from a period way beyond their time. :D

UK rating for Monsoon Wedding was '15' - probably rated for language more than anything else.

My 8 year old nephew saw Devdas and he enjoyed it mainly because of the look of the film - but he also found the ending 'stupid'!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai went down well with my young nieces and nephews.

monsoon wedding the f word is said a lot as well as other swear words (most in hindi), a few kissing scenes ( no nudity)
and lots of talk about "adult" themes - I'd watch it on my own without the kid first

devdas is fine for all ages

In my opinion neither of the films are really appropriate for a kid. In the case of Monsoon Wedding I would say it si a strict NO NO since the movie deals with very adult subjects such as Incest and Pedophilia. In the case of Devdaas too, I think the excessive presence of alchohol makes it rather unfit for kids and as it is I don't think the film has anything of any interest to a 11 yr old kid.

Just my 2 cents.
