I just got Priya down for her nap and put in Mughal-E-Azam (from Netflix) which I have been wanting to see since I first heard of it in 1999.

I know I'm out of the loop since Jugnu was born, but DAMN, the thing is colorized! I can't tell you how much I despise colorized movies! (I'm a film preservationist by trade, maybe too much of a purist.) And these colors look like one of those color on computer websites for kiddies! I know that the producers might have liked to make the whole film in color, but the fact is they DIDN'T. And all the lighting, compositions, costumes and makeup were done with black and white in mind!

Arrrgghhhh! I've heard that the previous DVDs with the original B&W with color sections are pure crap. Is that true?

Sorry to just show up after so long and vent....but DANG!

Dude, calm down. First of all, I'm suprised you didn't know that Mughal-E-Azam was recently (2004, I think) "colorized." Second, there are perfectly acceptable DVDs of the "B&W version" out there. Third, why not just turn the "color" setting of your television set all the way down? It'll achieve the same effect that a "B&W-version" DVD will. When the color song ("Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya?") comes on, just re-set the colors (go from "custom," back to "auto" [or whatever your TV does]).

Sorry to overreact!

Seriously, I have been in a no-movie coma since the tyke was born! Haven't seen or kept up with news at all.

And as an American girl, I didn't even know which section was originally color! Was that one song the only color part?

Thanks for your advice! I will try to stop hyperventilating now!

The last scenes from where Anarkali recieves the crown from Akbar right to the end of the movie was in colour also.

Maybe you should check out this web-site to bring you up to date with the colourisation process that the movie went through:

http://www.mughaleazam.com/

Personally I would have preferred a restored print of the movie in it's original form rather than the colourised version. There is a DVD release of the original version by Shemaroo. It's not the best transfer in the world but it is okay. Hope you manage to find it.

I haven't heard much about the list of movies that were slated for colourisation for a while - but when MEA was re-released there was quite a long list of classic movies that were going to be given the same treatment. Hope that this doesn't start you hyper-ventilating again! :D

Best Mughleazam version on DVD is Shemaroo's 2nd B/W release. "Collector's Edition". It's the longest/ fullest version plus crispier than Shemaroo's orig B/W release.

Unfortunately, it's on Time Bomb media, at least the one that I bought. It's rotten now.
May be newer batches are on better media ??

And it's full of noise reduction crap. Far from what it should look like.

Are you sure that the ending was originally in color? I'm pretty certain that the only "color" part was the song, "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya" (so to show off the lavish "Sheesh Mahal"). By the way, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, too, I heard, is going to be "colorized." Eh.

The comment from Muz is 100% correct.

I read on the web of Naya Daur to be colorized.

Shemaroo FullColor-Version wrongly says "anamorphic widescreen" on the case... the movie is 4:3 non-anamorphic.

Was it pseudo progressive??

I have the latest b/w MEA DVD which is field avgd. But sharp enough (not really sharp).

It has a Shemaroo watermark in the bottom and 2 speed forwarding happens smoothly.
