hi

i've never actually bought dvds online. usually just get them from the store here, but i was looking at nehaflix and indiaweekly...both of them have good prices, esp their 4.99 specials..

for example, using NEHAFLIX, a DVD would have shipping and handling charge of 2.98

so in total --> 4.99+2.98 = 7.97 US

so that would be 12.57 CDN

....now what else would i have to pay on top of 12.57: would i have to pay extra?

what would be the final total cost for a 4.99 DVD in Canada to get it to my door?

Hey...Nehaflix.com is pretty good...i don't think they'll charge u more...it's the dvd price n the shipping,n handling..the lowest shipping charges are $1.50 for handling and $0.99 for shipping to Canada.But u may have to pay extra for customs...'coz it says:
Quote:
Customs Fees for Canada, Japan, United Kingdom and any other countries except USA: We are not responsible for custom duty levies or any other associated fees

Hope that helps.

dograk, it depends on the customs people (how hard they check in your area) or how friendly/helpful Nehaflix are.

For example when I order from Indiaweekly, I never get busted for customs (and I only order 2-3 DVDs max at a time). And also when I order from HK retailer DDDhouse I never get busted either.

But I have ordered from US sites like Deep Discount DVD and Amazon, who do EVERYTHING by the book. They will put the official prices in US right there on the envelop for customs to see. This could have bad results for us. When I ordered a movie worth $24 US I didn't get hit, but when I ordered $28, I got billed an extra $10 cdn from customs.

So if you order 1-2 dvds from Indiaweekly you're fine. I don't know what will happen if you try to order upwards of 5 dvds or more.

btw, I'm located in Toronto, Canada - custom rules could be different in your area.

I also live in Toronto, Ontario. Darius25 you must be lucky, I order two or more I get almost everytime with a $14 custom charge!!!! Be very careful....When I order 1 at a time usually there is no problem...I would highly recommend whenever you order, order 1 at a time as well. Canadian Customs can never be trusted!

urbanlegend, I think it's the $amount that the customs are looking for - ie. as long as its within $20-25 US then they don't care - if it's even a penny more then they'll start charging you left right and centre....

My bravest trick was to order 3 dvds from HK and somehow that made it (It was worth $55 cdn) through the customs. Usually I only order about 2 dvds at most and that too from only Indiaweekly and DDDhouse.

I normally wouldn't order from any of these big time official US companies unless I REALLY have to. But for indian movies, yes, Indiaweekly is your safest choice.

I normally order 4 DVDs at a time with an average DVD price of $ 9 US. As it is manufactured in US/ Canada, there is no duty but I do get charged 15% PST-GST and $5 Cdn handling fee 20% of the times. If the invoice is not included (if the invoice is included, there is a 100% chance of paying PST-GST plus $5 handling fee) then they assume it as $20 US per DVD. So, my costs are:
(Assume $1 US = $ 1.60 Cdn)
4 DVDs = $36 US = $58 Cdn
Shipping= $6 US = $10 Cdn
Taxes = 20% x 15% x $80 US + 20% x $5 Cdn = $5 Cdn

Total Cost = $71 Cdn for 4 DVDs = $18 per DVD.

If all four DVDs are $ 5 US each, the cost comes to $ 47 Cdn for 4 DVDs i.e. $ 12 Cdn each DVD.

Compare it with actual and back-able invoice, 4 DVDs costing $9 US each will be:
($36 + $6) x 1.15 x 1.60 + $5 = $82 Cdn
i.e. $ 20.50 per DVD.

So whatever way you look at it, it comes to aprox double Canadian dollars to listed price in US dollars. One advantage I see is in selecting DVDs at ease instead of rush/ uncertainty in the busy shops.

Not to mislead!

i've ordered dvds online 4 times now and haven't been hit by customs yet. indiaweekly puts a little slip inside the package saying the value of the goods is $10 or something. i'm not sure if this is the reason why i haven't been hit. the most i've spent on one order is $90 cdn.

Guys I have been the unlucky one... I have been hit with customs quite sometime now , so much so that I have to order them via proxy ! Looks like folks at the Customs dept have got an idea that I invest heavily into DVDs :D

But yeah the golden rule is dont go for more than 4 Dvds... if you have 2 then find someone who can team up with u and get 2 of ur DVds so that U can spare urself the shipping costs ...
