Anyone out there, any experiences ordering DVD's from the actual India. What about prices in rupees and quality of the DVD editions? Or are all bollywood DVD's made in US or UK? For ex. it would be nice at last to obtain a really nice edition of Dil Se instead of the abominable Eros with burnt in subs.
Questions, questions from an ignorant hillbilly.

Also, i've seen warnings on bollywood web portals/sites that warns about retailers re-sealing used DVD's. Any experiences with such assholes. Is there a FAQ i should've read instead of annoying you?

I think Shemaroo is the only DVD company selling/ distributing Indian DVDs in India and they too have only 29 titles. THEY DON'T SHIP OUTSIDE INDIA.

Rest of the Indian DVD business is outside of India.

OK, thanks Rana. I guess we have to wait a while for the "Indian" Indian DVD industry then. Kind of cool to order from India. I guess that's the reason the prices i've seen in rupees have been so steep, the films were imported from US

This is kinda unrelated - but if you actually go to India, the you can generally get DVDs in a store called Music World - I think it has branches in most major cities (I've seen a branch in Kolkata). They sell some DVDs - generally Shemaroo, Bombino, and Eros ones.

Yeh, i wish. Hopefully some day. Sorry to bugger you, but any idea about approx. price levels? Could you fill your luggage with legit ones like when visiting HongKong?

Absolutely unrelated: Would love to see Madhuri or Urmila in a HK style kung Fu. With their dancing abilities they really could kick some ass. Bollywood goddesses will conquer the world sooner or later, it's inevitable

Hi Hum Apke-

Just writing 'cause you said you were a hillbilly. Is that so? I come from a long line of hillbillies myself. How did you stumble into Bollywood?

You're not buggering us at all!!! Ask as many questions as you like - I'm sure I won't be able to answer all of them, but someone on the forums is bound to be able to answer them!!!

As for the price, the DVDs I saw are approximately Rs 700-800, so slightly cheaper than the ones over here. I'm not too sure about availability though.

Hope this helps!

Whats a Hillbilly ?

Secondly, HAHK, are u , like Pagalchand, someone who needs subtitles to understand Hindi (or any Indian) movies ? If so then you do need to watch out for DVds with subtitles only.
As for the sites you have been mentioning the targets are obvious :- Indiaweekly and let me guess u must have seen them on Valueindia and Indiaplaza ( two of the biggest assholes and wankers on the net .. stay as far as you can from them.. Not only are they big rip-offs but they are highly unreliable in delivering their goods ).
As Bhaskar and Rana have mentioned in their posts, the best place in India for you to buy DVDs would be only Shemaroo and that to from their office directly. No other company produces DVDs and sell them in India (at least legally). However I am not sure if you are quality conscious or just want to watch a film by hook or crook. If you are amongst the former (like me and Rana and a few others here) then you are better off checking out the DVDs first, cos DVDs most often Pirated and cheap in quality when compared with other DVDs that are sold out here in da west.
However if you have to choose between Shemaroo authored films and Yashraj authored films (for the RK- series) then please go for the former as they are cheaper and much better in quality than the Yashraj versions ( though both are interlaced ).

I thought Bombino legally released DVDs in India - I know the quality is pathetic though!!!

Thank's for all the info bout prices and retailers in India. IW seems to be a higly regarded retailer among you folks. Yeh, i don't understand hindi but still often sees films without subs, the romance, action and dances - you get it anyway. Visuals are the most important to me and there's lots of it in indian film.
Pagalchand, i'm only a hillbilly in my mind. Sorry if i offended you Lil Abner folks. Al Capp was a genius.

Welcome, Hum Apke-

I'm not offended. My kind can certainly take good-natured ribbing--

SKNath-

Hillbilly is an American term referring to people from isolated communities in the mountains, particularly the Appalachian moutains. They are sometimes considered backward (by shallow urban types) but they are resilient people who live hard lives in non-industrialized areas. My husband tells me that jat is the equivalent Hindi term. So I am a jatni, so watch out!
