Let the good times roll, and quickly. That’s the motto of Hansal Mehta’s Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai. Not only is the [mild] adoption from American Pie reason to laugh but also given that director Hansal Mehta has just come off the success of Chhal, there are a lot of smiling faces out there. The team of Chhal returns, with accredited writer Suparan Verma penning the story, screenplay and dialogues for Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai and director Hansal Mehta taking the megaphone once again. The film is also producing team Harry and Pammi Baweja’s bounce back after Deewanee and Mujhe Mere Biwi Se Bachaao.
In the tradition of youthful films like Style and Yeh Dil Aashiqana, Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai is indeed a film for the youth and the young at heart. The diligent composition by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loyhas topped the charts thus far, and is quite popular amongst the youth. With its small budget and favorable story Hansal Mehta is not only aiming at a rib tickling acclaim but a box office success. It is well known that the film features a fresh star cast a fresh story and fresh music. The film has also been shot in distinct locales in Mauritius where several on screen portions were witnessed by fans. While Mauritius is a common place for film shoots, it is the beaches that attracted the production team. Many of the scenes in Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai, as is in the case of most youthful films, are located on the beach. Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai is also one of Mehta’s fast projects; the director completed it in less than a year.
With Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai director Mehta is aware that he has had to bring the subject matter at hand a tone lower for the Indian audience. He also has over eight main characters to justify occurrences for amidst the script.
First the basic premise. Like Dil Chahta Hai, the film begins when the four young men are entering their final year of college. Unlike American Pie, where the young men were entering college, these four young men are experienced enough to realize that it is time for them to find the women of their dreams and marry them too. But of course, their first goal is to find them and sleep with them. They are misunderstood men.
As they pursue their dream women and the prize at the end of the tunnel, the four young men come to understand what life is all about, and more so that its not all about what they think it is. But, each character is a story in themselves.
The four young men are Jhonny (Yash Pandit), Rahul (Aamir Ali Malik), Ranjit (Prashant Chianani) and Bunty (Vaibhav Jhalani). The four females whom their eyes are set upon are Preiti (Deepti Daryanani), Anu (Samita Bangargi), Esha (Payal Rohatgi) and Stella (Punanarva Mehta).
Already issues arise with their prospective relationships. Jhonny, the suave of the group who plays the guitar and oozes cool and caring ness, is in love with an older woman Stella. He looks over for his friends but is blind to his own love to this older woman. Stella is an economics teacher, and is a widow. Wise in her young age she if faced with experience but has to chalk it up when her friends put her up to it.
Ranjit is the athlete, the captain of the volleyball team and the ‘take it easy’ character. His eyes are deeply set on Esha. But his happy go lucky confidante is too much for the snooty Esha who believes the sun rises and sets at her feet. Esha is a central character amongst the group of friends. Many of the others believe she is a troublemaker and all of the others are aware of her rich and famous attitude.
Bunty is the leader of the group is almost always ready to take charge and successfully get out of jams. Yet he has no true love and has equal difficulty finding one. His friends attribute that to his crude character, as he cannot get over his sexual innuendo.
Finally, Rahul is the always-reliable odd man out in the group. Always being laughed it, Rahul is the geeky styled character that fits the bill of a nerd. He, unlike the others, has a match in Preiti who is just as clumsy as him.
These friends must not only deal with entering an important stage of life, but dealing with each other. As they come to understand each other, their flaws and highs, they realize “yeh kya ho raha hai.”
