After producing the acclaimed romantic comedy "Dumm Dumm Dumm" in 2000 and directing the controversial south Indian film "Kanathil Muthamittal" in 2001...Mani Ratnam returns as producer and screenplay writter for his next film under the banner Madras Talkies titled "5-STAR".

The film has a new cast of five 20+ something expolring life within their growing and exisiting Indian culture, so the music reflects this by being youthful fused with Indian and westernised style music. The film is directed by Susi Ganesan.

The soundtrack, on HMV, is done by newcomer Parasuram Radha, which I found to be somewhat mixed...

The first track "Thiru" features Timberland's produced samples for the songs "We Need A Resolution" and "Bills Bills Bills" (with thier permission as stated on the CD cover) and what the music director does with the samples is quite amazing and much better then some of UK's crew mixes. Prehaps the best track heard on this album.

The second track "Sunday" is a happy go-lucky/rock track and one of the albums weakest songs.

The third track "Engirundu" is a fussion of Northern Indian classical and modern south-Indian sounds. The tune is quite soothful, but not as good as other fussion type tracks heard on so many of recent tamil soundtracks like SRI or even BABA.

The fourth track "Raile" the main song has a soulful melody that is simple and well composed. But after repeated listening it doesn't grab the mind as good as Rahman or Yuvan Shankar Raja's tunes do.

The fifth track "5-Star" is the main track and is quite loud with techno and drum and bass and is a track that will be loved by the young teens!

The sixth track "Engalukku" is a short 1min track song that is used in the background of the film. Its quite catchy as with all of Ratnam's background score.

The final track is an instumental version of track 6.

Overall I found the album to be the weakest big budget soundtrack heard in Tamil films this year. It has nothing new or innovative as MRatnam's pervious films and will disspoint his fans. three of the tracks will be chart toppers with the young, but they won't be remember in the future like Dumm Dumm Dumm's Desing Raja or Uriye's Chaiya Chaiya.

A Fine Pair!

Anooradha Sriram's claim to fame was the Pop album 'Chennai Girl', though today she is better known as the "O...Podu" singer. Anooradha and her musician husband Sriram Parasuram have become the first ever music director couple in India. They are working together for the new film Five Star by Madras Talkies under the name Parasuram Radha. Anooradha is the first female crooner in India who has become a music director, though with her husband.

There are six numbers in the album, with an unusually strong melodic flair in some of the tracks. "Enngrundu Vandayada.." sung by a new singer from Bangalore, Chandana Bala, is steeped in the mood of mellow romanticism and is a great melody. However the racy number is "Thiru Thiruda.." rendered by Sreenivas and Sujatha which is definitely going to be a chartbuster.

Says Sriram Parasuram, "We both wanted to create a new entity with Five Star. We have tried our best to make every song sparkle". All the best to Parasuram Radha team, whose album is selling like chocolates in a school canteen.
