Last year alone director Mahesh Manjrekar released about three films. After facing critical success with Vaastav and Astitva the director was undoubtedly headed for acclaim unacquired. However, he would not come close as his future endeavors met a mixed response everywhere. The director signed a number of products and apparently had too much on his hands. His first film this year will be Venus Productions’ Hathyar, a sequel to his hit Vaastav, and is scheduled for a release this October in comparison to the many he had in the pipeline a year ago.

As a sequel to Vaastav, Mahesh Manjrekar has repeated Sanjay Dutt in Hathyar as Raghunath Shivalkar’s son- Rohit. Raghunath Shivalkar was the character portrayed by Sanjay in Vaastav. The true surprise is that he has also kept Namrata Shrodkar as Sonu, Raghunath’s wife and Rohit’s mother. This he feels makes the film look more real. It is an arguable issue with the audience’s acceptance since it was already an odd sighting with Sanjay paired as Namrata in Vaastav and it will be interesting to see her play his mother. Shilpa Shetty will play Rohit’s new love interest.

With the sub-line Face To Face With Reality, the successful banner Venus Films has intended a lot for Hathyar’s release. Not only have the promised an excellent soundtrack from Anand Raj Anand, the composer Manjrekar has worked with for over five projects, but they are promising a good film which keeps in mind Vaastav’s script, ending and theme. Venus has also had a great ear for music. Their musical albums have all predominantly became hits. With this soundtrack they have songs sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammad Salamat, Nazar Nazar, which they promise will hit the charts, and a remix of the same which features singer Alisha Chinoy. And like all Sanjay Dutt- Mahesh Manjrekar films there is a shlok in Hathyar’s album as well.

“A Man Who Lives By The Gun, Dies By The Gun”

The film, as promised, takes off where Vaastav ended. Rohit (Sanjay Dutt) has grown to a young respected man. However, it doesn’t take long for mobsters to become quite aware of his identity and blood lineage. What surprises Rohit is that the ones he trusts the most are not to be trusted. Rohit is shot by Pakya (Sharad Kapoor). Rohit is hospitalized and the film then recollects the story of Vaastav and the period of Rohit’s growth in which he falls in love with Shilpa (Shilpa Shetty). Pakya heads out now not only to ruin Rohit but also to avenge Shilpa for a mysterious witnessing of a crime. Rohit must save himself, prove his father’s name in pride and save Shilpa from situations she can not control. Rohit’s progression is undoubtedly meant to end up like his fathers, but his mother (Namrata Shrodkar) tries her best to prevent this. But in the end, they must all come face to face with reality.
