Doesnt look that impressive. Dark scenes dont look like they show that great detail. Lagaan looked better than this, at I think so, going by the shots.

Great work Sknath but why is the subtitles on in all the shots? Can it be turned off? Also the it's pretty hard to judge the print of the dvd from the shots since the size is small, so is the print scratched or dirty?

Does any one remember, which thread was it where some zulm members were skeptical of the possibility of English dub for MISSION KASHMIR or ASOKA??

Most Indian actors can speak good english. English dub will definitely help in penetrating Indian films into non-hindi speaking world.

Dubbing doesn't need to come from the original actors. Like playback singing, dubbing too, can be done by others. When they can dub for cartoons, why not for real actors?

hey guys, the Indian stores in Toronto put this one up for sale earlier than next week's release date so here's my review. I got it for $32 Cdn (inc. tax).

The disc features an anamorphic transfer with a ratio of approx. 2.35:1. The transfer seems quite good for an Indian film, with some pretty good colours (but it seems muted at times which is probably due to the way it was filmed) and some decent detail. Since this is a new film, there were no dirt marks or scratches on the print, and I couldn't see any motion or compression artifacts. I didn't see any blurring during high motion scenes so I suspect that the fast motion is handled adequately. The bit rate went as high as 9.0 but went as low as 5.0 so it probably howevers around 7 MB/sec. Of course it doesn't compare to a top rate R1 Hollywood DVD, but it is probably one of the best Bollywood transfers.

The available soundtracks are Hindi 5.1 and English 5.1. The english soundtrack does the job, but the pathetic voice actors go over the top during the emotional scenes which make renders them useless. The Hindi dialogues seem loud and clear. Both soundtracks feature a dynamic range of sound effects and the surrounds are active most of the time during the action scenes. There are plenty of directional effects, and the bass is loud and clear and kicks in at just the right moments. The soundtrack really comes alive with sound at all times with either the haunting score, the vibrant songs, or the many loud action scenes (especially the finale - turn that volume down!). One of the best sound mixes for Indian films ever. An important note - while the movie is dubbed in English, the songs are not dubbed so during these scenes, the language remains in the Hindi dialogue. Of course the Hindi track is fully intact.

The subs are yellow and are of a decent medium size. I think this is the same subs that was on the international release so the translation would be adequate (even for the songs) and there should be no spelling or grammar mistakes.

Oh and the English dub DOES NOT feature any of the original actors (as far as I can tell!). So no voices from Sanjay, Hrithik, Preity or Jackie. And the guy who dubs for Jackie is unintentionally hillarious!! The dub is just aweful guys, I think they're just provided for some comic relief!!

oh and SKnath's brightness is set on too low for those screenshots. My brightness is calibarated according to the THX setups on Fight Club or Titan AE, and that last scene with Jackie Shroff's eye DOES NOT look that dark as indicated by the screenshot. It's not the most detailed picture ever, but it doesn't look as bad (dark) as the screenshots indicate.
