Saraswati Sabatham- Ayngaran International
1.33:1 Original Aspect Ratio
Mono panned to fake 5.1
English subtitles
Video previews for "Aalavandhaan," "12B," and "Chocklet"
157 minutes

This is a disappointing transfer. The print is overly grainy throughout the entire film and there are often red spots and stains on the image. The image is generally somewhat dull. I noticed only very little edge enhancement. Splices can be seen a few times and the image occasionally gets a little soft. Some shimmering can be seen in the intricate details of the sets and costumes, probably exacerbated by the grain and some light DVNR. The problems are entirely the fault of the print used. The packaging mistakenly says anamorphic widescreen.

Audio

Once again, Ayngaran makes a phony 5.1 track from a mono source. The soundtrack is also subpar. Dialogue is consistently slightly muffled and at times is distorted. The English subtitles are awkwardly worded and at times gramatically incorrect.

Overall
-------
Ayngaran's old films always suffer from the dreaded red spot syndrome, but this transfer is also grainy and a little washed out. I think there are short snippets of footage missing also. Buy this only if you must absolutely have this film on DVD.
