MUMBAI: Actor Fardeen Khan, whose two films flopped at the box-office this year, will don the villain's mantle in ace director Ram Gopal Varma's much-talked about urban supernatural thriller Bhoot.
The film was earlier in the news because actor Ajay Devgan replaced Abhishek Bachchan.
The film had also made news because of its lead actress Urmila Matondkar. As Urmila was not the leading lady in Varma's last film Company, there had been speculation that the duo that gave hits like Rangeela and Satya had fallen out.
Varma says Fardeen plays an out-and-out negative role of a psychotic in Bhoot.
"Though the role was an integral part of the script from the start, it was open till this week. I decided on Fardeen on an impulse just two days ago, just as I had cast him in my Jungle two years ago," Varma said.
Bhoot, whose filming began Wednesday, has one of the biggest star casts for a Varma film. The film also stars legendary actress Rekha, Nana Patekar, Seema Biswas and Bengali actor Victor Bannerjee.
Varma said, "I worked with Mohanlal in Company for the first time because he was just right for the role. Now for the same reason, I've signed Victor. No one else could do the role that he's doing."
Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas were last seen together as husband and wife in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial debut Khamoshi: The Musical.
This is the first time Varma will be working with Rekha and Nana.
* Rekha's enthusiasm for working in Bhoot is evident in the fact that she will do the voice in the trailer for the film. She will also promote Bhoot in all prints of Varma's production Road when it releases August end.
For Fardeen, who has delivered a number of damp squibs at the box-office, Varma's film is a much-needed boost. His other films include home production Jaanasheen in which his director-father Feroz Khan plays villain.
