Hi everybody. I've asked for help choosing a TV here before and it really did help me choose, thanks for that.

I now have a question about a TV my friend is considering buying. He is all set to buy the 36 inch WEGA Sony XBR450 model. The new model of the same TV (XBR800) hits the market in the fall and he is getting a killer price on it...only problem is the store he is getting a killer price from is selling him the floor model. By this I mean that the one that is on demo. The guy said its been out for 3-4 months and that he will take a considerable amount off (he's offering it for 3239 Canadian dollars priced down from 3600 dollars). He says it comes with the usual warranty and everything. It's just the last one they have so they don't mind pricing it down. My question is (and his) is there any danger buying the floor model? As far as he can see there are no scratches or noticeable ones, and it looks great. Personally I told him I don't see the difference. What do you guys think?

P.S. This is one of the best TVs out there to view DVDs right. Its "high definition ready" and will produce the 420 p lines, can't get better picture than that from a DVD/other TV coming from a DVD, right?

I would follow "theon's " advice and go widescreen. Advantages are as follows:-
1. A progressive scan dvd player coupled with a progressive scan widescreen TV will give you crystal clear crisp picture.
2. Regular programming as we see it now is set to be phased out by the year 2006.The majority of programmes telecast will be in the aspect ratio of 16:9[ widescreen format ]
3.If you were watching a movie thru your dvd player, considering that the proper aspect ratio was maintained at the time of recording the dvd, you would get the same length & width of the picture as you would watching the same movie in a theatre.
I gotta go, more next time.Make sure you check out other brands like Hitachi, Panasonic, Proscan Etc
Happy hunting-Good luck

to add to "jas's" post:

- the bars (if any) on widescreen tvs are much smaller than the bars on 4:3 tvs, so more picture area (just look at the bars on knph, those bars cover more than half the area of the screen!)
- the picture quality on the newer projection widescreen tvs can still be almost as good as direct-view sets, just use a calibration disk

Sony TV, in consideration here, gives you full advantage of widescreen as well.

In 4:3 mode full height of the screen is scanned.

In widescreen mode, only the 16:9 area of the screen is scanned.
