Monsoon Wedding is now officially the highest grossing Indian Film worldwide including India ever. Its worldwide box office receipts now total over US $22.2 million, which translates to approx 110 crore rupees. It is also the highest grossing Indian film in the US by far with its current US total at US $13 million. The second higest grossing Indian film in the US is Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham with approx $2.3 million. Monsoon Wedding is also now in the all time US top ten of Foreign Language films.

Just thought i'd give everyone interested an update since its been a long time since I last posted the MOnsoon Wedding box offce report. :)

Oh by th way for those who were hoping 'Lagaan' might match Monsoon Wedding at the box office in the US. Sorry to dissapoint but the re release of Lagaan aimed at the general US market has turned out to be a total dud with a final gross of just $46,000. Columbia pictures dropped the idea of further expanding the films run accross the country due to the exceptionally poor response to the film in the few cities that it was screened.

I've been waiting for the past few months for Lagaan to reach my city. I guess I'll have to settle for watching it at home now :baaa:

I am so glad Monsoon Wedding made so much money!!! Its a wonderful film and it deserves all the attention. I only wish that more films like this are made which would once and for all diminish poor and weak ass films like K3G!

All hopes now on Rahul Bose " Everybody says I'm fine" which looks quite good in the trailers.

Let's see why...
Columbia Tristar releases the film on dvd for the general public, and that was a pretty good release. Then the oscar nomination came and Lagaan won a lot of hype from that, and people went to see it on dvd then. Then, finally, after all the hype died down, more than a month after the oscars, it released in two theaters. Though it still won excellent reviews, Columbia Tristar screwed up on this release majorly. A smarter thing to have done would be to put it in theaters first, (seeing as they picked up the rights long before), and then put it out on dvd a month after the oscars. Basically, switch the dates.

I hope the next time we get this far with a Hindi film, we don't screw up like this.

You know if india wants to keep being recognised by the international market, they need to aim to make higher quality films such as Monsoon Wedding and Lagaan, because as we all know the majority of bollywood movies usually has a number of corny scenes which destroys the whole movie, of which causes it never to be taken seriously, esp by the west. For example, when Kareena Kapoor was trying to act 'cool' with her friends in K3G, this threw the film off course...there were even a few westeners who left the cinema at this point.
Go to amazon.com and you'll see the type of indian films that the west may like...there's only 3...Monsoon Wedding, Lagaan and Asoka .

unfortunately, I think we're in for a shock with Kaante.

East is East, Bend it like Beckham, Chutney Popcorn, The Terrorist, My Son the Fanatic, etc.?

The problem is, we don't push our high quality products hard enough. I seriously think that (maybe a bit of reworking) a film like Legend of Bhagat Singh could do well on the international market, as could a film like Mission Kashmir. Devdas, possibly. But, honestly, regarding LOBS, every single person I've showed it to has said that it's an exceptional film, on par with some of Hollywood's best.

LOBS? Come on, I'm sure you have seen better films...lobs was a boring, loud and unaccurate story of bhagat singh

Its funny how threads on this forum meander away from the original topic so often. Come on guiys this is not a discussion of "Legend of Bhagat Singh", which by the way was at best a decent film but by no measure a great one. But rather this is a thread for the discussion of "Monsoon Wedding" & "Lagaan" to some extent, that too in respect to their box office performance rather than the quality of the films.

PS: Ali you seriously need to take a look at making some policy of keeping the threads to stay with the original topics.

you seem to forget that monsoon wedding played an a LOT more screens thatn Lagaan... and how many people are going to watch a 4 hour movie on the big screen, which is already available to watch comfortable at home on DVD...
it's useless to compare the two...

it is however undeniable that monsoon wedding is a huge success...

That's just the way things happen. In real life, conversations do branch out . And besides, for how long can you discuss their box office prospects?

Well, it's your wish. I'll just ignore all talk about LOBS in here, but I'll still hold my standings that it's a top-class film.

Getting back to the discussion, it's all a question of good economic practices. To some extent, Monsoon Wedding was assured success. A good director with previous international hits (including the oscar nominated Salaam Bombay), plus an international promotion company to start out with (and, to add on, the film was an Indian film, not a Bollywood-style film).

Lagaan had more humble beginnings, and though expectations were high, no one would have expected international success... in retrospect, had people known about the oscar nomination and international prospects, things would have been done differently. I'm sure for Aamir Khan's next production, it will be done differently.

Hey, don't forget - Monsoon Wedding's largely in English. Imagine if Bend It Like Beckham was in Hindi - obviously it wouldn't get so big.
