Just saw these two movies on cinema back to back and I must say I was disspointed with the two. While Devdas is the better film (beats many of the Hindi releases this year), it lacks soul (no real location shots) and also has a weak screenplay (hammy performances - over long scenes). The only thing I found to be worth wathcing in the film was the music score, dance direction & prodcution technical aspects, but sadly these stand out far above from the overall film and thus diviates from the overall plot details and chracterisation.

This is one solely for fans of the story of Devdas, who might like the new treatment the classic tale is told in.

APD is another major disspoitment, with the whole film being a copy from numerous Hollywood/Cantonesse films. I wonder if Warner could sue Nadiawala for copyright infrigement of the Matrix scene??? The action scenes are carried out in the worse manner - and is very much over the top like action scenes from a Tamil film!!! Being a higher budgerted Hindi film I would expected a whole lot more from Vikram Bhaat whose lower budgeted film Ghulam even had a far better action scene at the climax, without the bullshit fight foreplay and wires! With crass editing, dull score, avarage technical production values, and poor graphics this film hardly amounts to the wonders that many critics have called it. Overall its a boring film with a few funny lines from the ever-so-excellent Paresh Rawal.

Just out curiosity Sunny do you understand Hindi or do you rely on the subtitles? Don't get me wrong but you need to understand the language to "feel the film" especially for a film like Devdas.

In Hindi films its generally urdu that it spoken as Hindi uses very different lexis and is sometimes heard on screen. I understand both Hindi and Urdu without subtitles.

When I say the film lacks soul I mean to say that use of location, poor dramarisation and lack reality is felt when I saw this film. It seemed more like an expensive opera drama then a social issue, which the theme of the screenplay dealt with.

Yaar - Ab Samjhe? ;)

SUNNY! i WOULD ADD ANOTHER COMMENT HERE!

APD! imho..IS AN INSULT TO SENSE AND SENSIBILITIES!PERIOD! IF U CAN PULL PARESH RAWAL OUT OF THE REST SHIT! HE IS ENJOYABLE!AS EVER!

DEVDAS..IS A DIFF FILM, NOT PERFECT/NOT BRILLIANT/NOT CLASSIC/NOR MASTERPIECE BUT STILL WELL MADE, I MHO, BETTER THAN ALL OTHER INSPIRED CRAP WE ARE EXPOSED TOO...WATCHING..APD EVEN ON DVD U FEEL DISGUSTED.
WATCHING DEVDAS EVEN WITH SKYROCKETING EXPECTATIONS..DONT OFFEND YOU..U COME OUT OF THE FILM, CONTENTED WHAT U HAVE SEEN..NOT WITH WOW!!! OR OVERLY ELATED, I MUST SAY..DEVDAS IS A GOOD FILM!TO WATCH ON BIG SCREEN..PEOPLE OVERATED HDDCS, BUT AS A FILM I WAS NOT MUCH IMPRESSED EITHER..BUT WATCHING IT ON BIGSCREEN WAS GOOD!
TALKING ABOUT A BRILLIANT FILM IWILL TALK ABOUT KHAMOSHI..THE MUSICAL....ABSOLUTELY WITH NO RESERVATIONS, FOR OTHER TWO HDDCS AND DEVDAS I HAVE GENUINE RESERVATIONS ,FOR NOT CALLING THEM BRILLIANT FILMS.
BOTH FILMS ARE HEAVILY COMMERCIALLY MOTIVATED AND HAVE PROS AND FEW CONS TOO!

CALLING MOHABTAEN/K3G BRILLIANT FILM WILL BE DOING DISFAVOUR/DISHONOUR TO YOURSELF..BUT THEY WERE EXTREMELY COMMERCIAL! :baaa: ;) :vsneaky:

Sunny and you can see Arsh means business as he has kept his Caps Lock ON for the entire post. I will concur with Arsh. I had no great expectations from DEVDAS other than the following :-
1.) Madhuri's dancing
2.) Dola Re Dola
3.) Set designs
4.) The dialogues of cos

APD was a trashy film and I will concur with you on that. It is indeed an insult to viewers sense and sensibilities...

I'd have to second you on the fact that Sanjay Bhansali's Devdas has deviated the true essence of the novel. Though I didn't mind its melodrama, since the the whole film was gorgeous to look at.
