One of the movies Channel 4 is showing as part of the Indian Summer season is Lagaan. I have a feeling they'll be showing it on two days (one half on each day) - will be interested to see what other films they show.....

This is good news, but where did U hear this Bhaskar? I always thought Channel 4 would soon show Lagaan and I think they'll show Monsoon Wedding soon too as filmfour has bought the rights to it.
In the past few years C4 has shown some top Indian films during the summer season and I think they do there research to spend money on showing the most popular films. Maybe they'd also show KNPH, KKHH, K3G and Asoka. Needless to say, they took their time this yr and i'm not sure if they'd show the full 10 weeks of movies as they have in the past.

btw, does anyone else know what's coming on TV for this 'Indian Summer' season. I saw the advert in the monsoon wedding DVD inlay card, but I was unsure of what it was about. I heard they are having a weekend of bollywood in Hyde park, where Sholay and Lagaan will be shown on big screens, but I wonder if this is just BS.

Unfortunately, there's not much clear news at the moment. Even their website doesn't have much info - check it out:

:D

"Lagaan" is on Channel 4 in two parts - 3rd and 4th August
(source: Channel 4 website)

"Bollywood Women" starts 28th July. It is a ten part series of films, which highlights the work of Bollywood's best actresses. I have no idea how long the documentaries/biographies preceeding the films will last but hope they are substantial and not 5 minute brief bios. The following actresses/films are included in the season:

Nargis - "Mother India"
Meena Kumari - "Pakeezah"
Waheeda Rahman - "Kaagaz Ke Phool"
Geeta Bali - "Albela"
Vyjanthimala - "Gunga Jumna"
Jaya Bachchan - "Fiza"
Aishwairya Rai - "Kandukondain Kandukondain"
Nadia - "Diamond Queen"
(Source: "DESI" July 02 issue)

I will be very surprised if Madhubala is not additionally featured.

Although Aishwairya's performance in Kandukondain Kandukondain is very good, I think that Tabu's performance is outstanding and she is by far the better actress.

Anyhow - time to stock up on High Grade tape as it's highly unlikely (to say the least) that we'll get good copies of the older films in this season on DVD.

Yeah, I'm very surprised at Madhuri's Admission...how did they forget her?
And Manisha K gave some great performances too...also where is Shabana Azmi? Smita Patil?
Jaya B gave better performances than Fiza!
It would look as though C4 didn't do their research well.

...and who is Nadia?

Nadia (AKA "Fearless Nadia"!) was born in 1910 and according to BFI's Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema - she was India's most famous stunt actress in a string of hit films in the 1930's - 1940's. Her real name was Mary Evans and she was born in Perth, Australia (Greek Mother/English Father). In her films she was usually accompanied by her horse Punjab Ka Beta (I am not pulling your leg!)

She always did her own stunts the most famous being jumping from carriage to carriage on a moving train.

One of her films "Hunterwali" (1935) came in at number 61 in Eastern Eye's Top 100 films of all time. The copy reads "her stunts left the bravest of men speechless"..."over 50 years after her last film, no Bollywood hero or heroine has come close to matching her daring stunts". A documentary was made about her in 1993 called "Fearless: the Hunterwali Story".

"Diamond Queen" was made in 1941. I have never seen any of Fearless Nadia's films - so it should be interesting!
