THE DEVDAS EXPERIENCE - THE MUSIC

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's adaptation of the tragic love story Devdas is arguably the most eagerly awaited film of the year. Not only does it star three of Bollywood's leading superstars (Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan) but this film marks Bhansali's third directorial venture and is his follow up to the 1999 super-hit Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. In an exclusive Radio Sargam feature, up-and-coming British filmmaker Rupa Nandha takes a look at the song picturisations in the movie.

(WARNING: The following article features details on the narrative of Devdas. If you would prefer not to find this out before watching the film, we recommend you do not read on! )

But will compensate that with a viewing here in Ottawa itself :)

Ek baat aur mrig... tere nick ke peechey -ya laga diya toh ek Jhakkas phillum bhi ban jaata hai !

DOLA RE DOLA:
Luckily we do get a bit more! As it is customary in Paro's in-laws household to use soil from a brothel to build a statue of Durga Maa, Paro visits a brothel. Paro realises that the courtesan that is standing before her is the Chandramukhi who has been influencing Devdas's uncultured lifestyle. But as with the audience, Paro is soon won over by Chandramukhi's humanity and heartiness. Paro invites Chandramukhi to her home to take part in the celebrations and to sing and dance with her. I must confirm that Dola re dola isn't a dance competition. Seeing the two beauties together is mesmerising and is a great privilege to witness two of Bollywood's greatest dancers matching each graceful move step-to-step

( The New Feminine version of Laurel & Hardy ) :D :D :D

Yaar Arsh yeh Desi logon (especially the confused desis) ko Urdu / Hindi theek se samajh nahi aata hai

Kotha is not = BROTHEL
RandiKhana can be = BROTHEL

Chandramukhi was never a Prostitute but she was a courtesan (dancer).. wish ppl could understand that !

Arre baap re! Ab Hindi maen baat karke bahut saal ho gaye hain. Krpya, Mrigya aur Jhakkas ka arth batayen.

That's enough Hindi for me. Phew! Unfortunately, I know I won't be going to the first show of Devdas. The crowds here are unbelievable. For KKHH, I had to wait almost a month before trying to go in the cinema. People were going nuts at the theater doors.

Mrigaya = First film of Mithun Chakravarty jiske liye usey National award bhi mila tha

Jhakkas = Mumbaiyaa slang ( perfect is the meaning )

Now I have my own story of KKHH. It was released along with Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan

We wanted to catch up with KKHH the first day night show, but found that CINEPLEX had sold out the tickets.. (this was a Friday night). Then we went to check up BMCM and found that the film hadnt arrived and hence we had to come back on Saturday for the show.
We did that and watched it, first day matinee... but after the show was over we decided why not go and get a glimpse of KKHH (yani back to back films) and wahan bhi bad luck tickets sold out for all the shows that day. So we booked in advance for the Sunday show (matinee) and then I could watch it. Man the desi chicks in the film all weepy weepy .... which I found very amusing infact.

As for BMCM...i was pretty embarresed as I along with my friends from India were the only folks who were actually LOL-ing at Govinda's jokes ! :wot: That day i decided never to watch a desi film here in Canada again... ( i subsequently broke my promise but have again kept that for 3 years now and hopefully its gonna break with DEVDAS :D )

I agree yar!!! Just spoil the CONCEPT man!!!

If Chandaramukhi works in brothel, then UMRAO JAAN, and MEENA KUMARI inPAKEEZAH did the same?

and EVEN Anarkali in MUGHL E AZAM could be lumped in the same leadue!! Damn fools!!

But these sTUPID DESIs Dont know DIFFEERENCE between CHANDANI BAR and DEVDAS..Bu U know People like RGV etc, has narrowed down the diff anyways over the period of time...It comes to all ROZI, Roti thing, U dance? or ? for Fun or Money?? Just different Perspective IMHO??
Culture / Norms are very Diff??? Look at Zubaida and her aunt..Rose? where would u ADJUST them???

BTW!! I am BOOKED for FIRST DAY, FIRST SHOW, 5 pm, sharp on BIG-SCREEN, DTS sound??? Kya Bolta tou?? :baaa:

Long time ago, I used to actually like Mithun. Haven't seen his movies in ages. My education sadly lacks knowledge of the Mumbaiyya phrases except for the "Apun ko" phrase. When I do make it to the theater, I can guarantee that boatloads of tears will be flowing from my eyes  Yeah, I am an emotional semi-desi chick.

As for BMCM, I had the misfortune of seeing that movie on DVD. Since then, I haven't watched any Govinda movies. Don't hate him but don't care for his style of movies.

Time to go make enquiries and see if it is possible to book in advance......

On the contrary, sknath, I would love to go watch a film by myself. :D Tagging along with the family which includes two kids who don't understand Hindi doesn't make for a pleasurable viewing experience. The last movie that the family saw in the theater was Taal, 1/2 of which was spent taking them to the bathroom :where:  Later on, I did go see HDDCS with my SIL and that was a wonderful experience. I am hoping to go see Devdas with only adults for company. Though the kids love to sing and dance to songs from Lagaan, DTPH, KKHH, KNPH and K3G, they cannot sit thru' 3+ hrs of a movie.
