K3G's UK opening weekend figure of 473 255 pounds($675 000 US) smashed previous Indian Film Records!

and...

K3G SMASHES IT'S WAY INTO THE NORTH AMERICAN TOP 10 WITH AN ESTIMATED WEEKEND GROSS OF
$1.04 MILLION US!

In North America K3G opened to around 80 screens. Yaadein's opening weekend screen average was $11 552, so K3G's screen average is bound to be a minimum of $13 000. If this is the case then K3G's opening weekend figure in North America is about $1.04 million US. This makes K3G the FIRST INDIAN FILM EVER to list on NORTH AMERICA'S TOP 10 weekend charts coming in at #10 pushing over Ameilie's $773 164.

Add it up ($1 040 000 + $675 000) and K3G's weekend take in UK, USA & Canada is $1.715 million US dollars.

And also K3G was released internationally in Austrailia, Europe, Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Dubai etc. If you add all this up, K3G'S WEEKEND OVERSEAS TOTAL IS NO LESS THAN $2.2 MILLION US!

$2.2 million US dollars = 11 crore Indian Rupees!

WOW THAT'S MIND BOGGILING!!!!

I got my figures from AVS, bizhove has copied and pasted the AVS article and put it up above. And the AVS article was quoted from Yash Raj Film distributors who are the K3G's distributors overseas. And if you look at how I got my calculation you will realize how I got my figure for North America.

And the reason it wasn't listed in the North American Box Office charts for this weekend was because K3G's figure's were not reported on time. So if K3G's figure's were reported on time, then they surely would have been listed.

And just one more thing, K3G is not even listed on the top 60 list in North America, so does that mean K3G has made 0 US dollars this past weekend! I don't think so. By not having a mention in the list doesn't nessesarily mean that it didn't make around $1 Million US dollars. Infact it made just that around a 1 million US dollars in North America. Just look at my above calculations, and the AVS report. :DD:

Adilr17,I don't know where you got these numbers,K3G in no-where to be found in North America box office for the weekend of Dec.14-16. Per Hollywood reporter,Variety and other movie trade publication K3G is not even in top 30 0R 40. Check your sources again you might be disappointed. K3G IS NOT IN NORTH AMERICAN TOP TEN NOT EVEN TOP 30,40 or 50.

US Weekend Box Office (December 14 - 16, 2001)

# Title $Collection

3 Not Another Teen Movie $12,615,116
4 Harry Potter $9,919,596
5 Behind Enemy Lines $5,414,981
6 Monsters, Inc. $4,980,223
7 Spy Game $2,465,455
8 Black Knight $2,035,439
9 Shallow Hal $1,492,695
10 Amelie $773,164
11 Out Cold $694,866
12 Thirteen Ghosts $430,164
13 Domestic Disturbance $425,372
14 The Wash $309,514
15 The Royal Tenenbaums $276,981
16 Life as a House $274,239
17 Training Day $229,348
18 Heist $228,606
19 The Man Who Wasn't There $225,257
20 Hardball $209,441

Hmmm.. that pretty much tells me that K3G did not even collect as much as Hardball which in terms of US dollars is $209,441. Although I am quite perplexed by the chart and figures myself and almost find it hard to believe. But then again, these charts have been around for decades and known to be very accurate.

As logical as your assesments may seem to you, that is all they are, 'Assesments'. How in the world do you, 'for sure' conclude that the screen average of K3G must and have to be higher than that of Yaadein. Also even if so, then why only $13,000, why not higher. Since there is no scientific rationale behind your choice of figures, then why settle for that number, why not use $20,000 or any other number between 1 and whatever is the capacity collection for all the theaters.

What I find even more unbelievable then your confident claim to accuracy of your US collection figures, is the emphatic manner in which you conclude and declare the sum total of the collections from other overseas markets. What did you do, just type the first figure that came to mind, or was there a more rational calculation or god forbid accurate source for these figures.

WOW THAT'S MIND BOGGILING!!!!

What is more mind boggling then the figures is your confidence in stating them without any rationale or reliable source of information.

Yeah like they are the most honest and reliable sources. Specially considering they found it convenient enough not to report their so called "record collections". By the way, which if they had done would only have been to their advantage from a marketing point of view. And the failure to do so is nothing less than a marketing catastrophe. By the way what has stopped them from releasing the figures later on and having the charts corrected. As a matter of fact, rough estimates are normally released on Sunday and it is not until late Monday that final figures are made available by the studios. Also, there are numerous occassions when figures have been corrected later due to mistakes made previously in estimating final figures.

I And if you look at how I got my calculation you will realize how I got my figure for North America.

Well I have looked hard and long, but I still fail to comprehend or as you put it 'realize', how you came to those figures.
Quote:

That sounds like a really sorry excuse. But if it is true, then YashRaj Films has got to be a really sorry bunch of marketeers and if I were Karan or Yash Johar, I would be mighty upset with Yash Raj Films for it. After all other than the fact that this is bad for the film, YashRaj is just handling the release on a commision basis for the Johar's and therefore they would be the real losers for a goof up made by YashRaj Films.

Hmmm.. well are you suggesting that a movie that does not appear in the top 60 makes $0. I would love to hear your logic for how you concluded that. If there is a logic to it at all.

Having stated the above, I would like to clarify that I am not saying the figures reported by you cannot be true. But rather, what I am saying is that it is the manner in which you have reported these figures, which make them less credible and difficult to believe. Also, it does not help that you have all of a sudden appeared on this board and made 4 posts, all of which seem to be made towards one end only, that is to promote the film K3G. Therefore, if there is more evidence you have in support to your post, then I suggest you provide them. That is if you really want us to take your post seriously and to believe that your not just a 'troll' out to promote the film.

I think estimates reported for K3G are all bogus. I have checked Hollywood Reporter,Variety and other related sites,no mention of K3G.

1 million dollar, so according to the list SANJAY pasted here it should be in 10th position.
And as i mentioned above it was with a mistake they did not report the figures in time, therefore it isnt in top ten charts

India FM's info is generally accurate....... and they say they got it from yashraj... but ofcourse we probably have to wait and see the week end box office..... cos the film has 73 prints in circulation in US and the demand has been high so the film has definitely raked some moolah...... anyway collections in india have been good and booking for 2nd week is close to 100%... so 1 more week and thats the acid test the 3rd week.... the film shuld be a winner... and the UK collections are awesome :-)

What I fail to understand is if this is true, which it very well might be. Then why have the charts not been corrected and why have YashRaj films not made an effort to do so. After all I would imagine this to be of great benifit to the marketing of the movie.

check this article from rediff.com giving clarification as to why k3g was not listed in the US charts. i dont think anyone would have paid rediff to print this ... that is highly doubtful... as the article here seems very authentic.....
GO K3G Go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

K3G makes history in US, UK
Aseem Chhabra in New York

Karan Johar's Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham had the biggest opening for a Bollywood film in North America - grossing slightly over $1 million, but Daily Variety, the bible of the Hollywood industry was silent about it.

K3G's opening gross far surpassed the previous records maintained by Hum Saath Saath Hain and Yaadein. Both the films grossed approximately $650,000 in the opening weekend.

"They found the number too high," said Jawahar Sharma, a spokesperson for Yashraj Films. "They doubted that on 73 prints we managed such a high gross."

Sharma added that Variety and AC Nielsen EDI - the actual box office reporting agency -- had asked him for evidence to support his numbers, but meanwhile he had missed the deadline for the December 18 issue of the newspaper.

"It is unfortunate that EDI and Variety would not believe the distributor," said Gitesh Pandya, the man behind boxofficeguru.com - one of the most respected box office sites. Pandya is also the producer of American Desi which was the most successful Indian film in North America in 2001, until K3G was released last weekend. "But their position is understandable, because it (K3G's box office) is so surprising, not just for an Indian movie, but for any ethnic movie, be it Spanish, Chinese or Korean."

"I have never seen an Indian movie open this big," Pandya added. "But with the promotion and the anticipation it was set for big opening."

Daily Variety's position was defended by Dade Hayes, senior editor of the newspaper.

"There is a basically an honors system that defines how and when the numbers have to be reported," Hayes said. "When you get to a certain level, there are things that can raise a red flag."

If Daily Variety had reported the number in its December 18 edition, K3G would have commanded the prestigious number 10 spot among movies running in North America - the highest opening position for a Bollywood film. Instead the number 10 spot was taken up by Miramax's hit French film and Oscar hope -- Amelie, which grossed $773,000 for the weekend.

With a gross of over $1 million K3G also had the highest per screen average for a Bollywood film in North America -- $13,836, approximately $400 more than the previous record set in 1999 by Subhash Ghai's Taal. Both those screen averages are extremely high for Hollywood standards. The number one movie of this weekend - Vanilla Sky, starring Tom Cruise and his current love interest Penelope Cruz had a per screen average of $9,123.

K3G also had a huge opening in the UK. With $689,000 it was the number three movie in that country - two spots below the monstrous hit of the season, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

"I told them (Variety and EDI) that K3G is number three in UK," Sharma said. "That has never happened before. But they were concerned that if our numbers weren't correct, it would affect their credibility."

Pandya added the UK gross -- compiled by the British arm of AC Nielsen EDI, clearly indicated that the North America numbers supplied by Yashraj Films were correct.

"If the gross is that big in UK, then you have to believe that it is one of the biggest, if not the biggest in North America," he said.

According to Sharma nearly 10,000 people saw K3G at the largest desi theater in US - the 13 screen Cineplaza in North Bergen, NJ. Similar attendance numbers were reported by Naz 8 Cinemas in Fremont, CA and the chain of three theaters in New Jersey and California, operated by Vista India.

And at the Loews State Theatre in the heart of Manhattan's Times Square district, extra seats had to be added to accommodate the crowds that had turned up for the Saturday afternoon show. Last year Mission Kashmir became the first Bollywood film to be released in Times Square. But so far no Bollywood film has had a successful run at that location, until this weekend.

Pandya said that often Bollywood films are shown in independent theaters, which are off the industry's radar screen. EDI does not have the older theaters in its system, some of which used to show American films, but went bankrupt, with the boom of multiplex chains. Reports from these independent theaters are harder to verify, he said.

"Some of the theaters showing this movie should be on the EDI system, but some are not," Pandya said. "And until all the reports are in the EDI system, you have to take the distributor's word for it."

K3G is Karan Johar's second directorial venture. His first, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ended up with a $2 million run in North America. Kuch, Kuch. was the also the first film marketed in North America by Yashraj Films - a distribution outfit run by producer and director Yash Chopra.

"In many ways Kuch Kuch. (by all counts the first film to gross over $2 million in North America) was a benchmark for films overseas," Sharma said before the release of K3G. "I think K3G is capable of setting a new record."

Although elated with K3G's numbers, Sharma also sounds disappointed.

"This (reporting in Variety) was our opportunity in America to make people realize how large the market is for Bollywood films. And I am disappointed since we missed the chance."

Checked box office from 12/19, collections from K3G no where to found. usually the producers/distributers flaunt record breaking collections to boost a movies box office. In Chicago there is a large Indo-Pak community and none of the local papers have advertised K3G. As far the movies box office collections are concerned it seems to appear visible only to a few and invisible to others. In past I have seen Hindi movies box office collections listed in Hollywood reporter,Variety and others so if K3G's collections are missing there is some daal mein kala or the whole daal is kaali.

I can't believe everyone on this forum thinks that K3G wouldn't make it to the top 20 at least! It would be ridiculous if it fell below top 20! Major Hindi films like this don't go below that - I've never seen that happen in recent times. If you just open your eyes you'd see all the cinemas showing the film had all tickets sold out. If it's not even in the top 60, obviously there's been a glitch in the reporting. Read the rediff article and see if it clears things up a bit. A film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Amitabh Bachchan not even making it to the top 60?!!!!
