Hello,

I was just wondering what you thought are the best Indian devotional (and/or mythological) films ?

I Love Most Devotional Films, But Here Is My List:

1. Mahabharat

2.Devi Maa (Boon Of Godess)

3.Lanka Ni Ladi Ne Ghoga No Var (Gujarati) (Not Really Devotional But Good)

4.Raja Kalliamman (Tamil) ???

Though I'm not a fan of these types of films Ammorou had good special effects!

I liked Thiruvilayadal (Tamil). It is an amazing showcase for Sivaji Ganesan's talents.

I second that.

Rana

P.S.
For sknath:
If you go on the "ECLS" devotional theme, then did you consider K.Asif's "LOVE AND GOD". It's title song says it all, "Mohabbat Khuda Hai". Also did you consider how much devotion, how many lives, how many producers and how many years in the making, went into this film.

Well maybe K.Asif spelt his title wrong. Had he chosen LOVE and DOG, his film would have been more successful (and completed also with its original hero Guru Dutt :D )... Pity, by the time it was completed no one even bothered to watch it .

But if I were to choose some mythological films, I have lot of names from the Telugu Film industry which can run into pages.

Notably :- Narthanashala, Pandava Vanavasam, Mayabazaar, Daana veera soora Karna (4 hr long film ! ) .. ( all based on the Mahabharata..) and many others.

If I had to go with all out devotional films (as in conventional sense), I would go with the not so old telugu super hit... Annamayya (yeah Nagarjuna essayed that role) !

1. Sita Swayamvar (1976) starring Jayapradha and directed by Bapu. It's the dubbed version in Hindi of the Telugu Seeta Kalyanam. There can be no parallel in the world of mythologicals. It reigns supreme as poetry on celluloid.
2. By extension, the sequel Shri Ram Vanvas (1977) produced by the same company, P.S.R. Pictures
3. Har Har Gange (1979) directed by the king of Hindi mythologicals, Babubhai Mistri

Sadly, none of these are available on DVD yet, but I hope that will change this year.

No kidding, by checking your profile, your last two posts have been one year apart each.

With regards to this thread, I've discovered a new found love in G.V. Iyer's near masterful Adi Shankaracharya. Iyer brings forth a very humanist understanding of the legendary philosopher's ideologies and has a very organic visual style of depicting his story onscreen.

Some more recommendations:

Gopal Krishna (1979) starring Sachin and Zarina Wahab. Another classic - one of the best renditions of Krishna Leela and his childhood pastimes on film, aside from the Mahabharat teleserial

Hanuman Vijay (1974) directed by Babubhai Mistry - a little-known story from one of the more obscure versions of the Ramayan (ok, maybe not obscure but its not from Tulsidas or Valmiki's versions). A highly entertaining film with good songs
