As mentioned in a couple of threads before also, this deal is between Suhash Ghai and Sony Entertainment TELEVISION INDIA. The deal therefore is for the sattelite broadcasting rights and have nothing to do with home video or DVDs. Thus to answer your question, NOPE you can't hope for anything, no widescreen anamorphic or decent soundtrack :( atleast not because of this deal. But I guess we can continue to dream and hope for some other miracle.

Thing about MK and Lagaan was that they both had very technical minded people behind the films that understand (well I think they do! ) the new digital mediums; Amir Khan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. On the other hand we have Mr Ghai who would rather you watch his films on cinema only as other mediums 'abuse to your sensibilities of appreciating a good film'

Then again, it still surprises me the technical proficient films coming from Indian cinema yet their makers refuse to acknowledge home entertainment mediums. Movies like Aks, Aankhen, Company & Chandni Bar are very well thought-out and made movies yet that effort and hard work is never seen on the DVDs – hell you can’t even make out people’s faces in Chandni Bar let alone the backdrop settings! I would have expected more from these new and young directors, but Subhash Ghai is an old timer now – I doubt he’ll ever understand the demand for better quality DVDs.

You guys keep missing the PICTURE or should I say the details of the deal. The deal is only for the satellite broadcasting rights. The deal does not include overseas or domestic distribution or for that matter overseas or domestic home video rights. As for 'Lagaan & Mission Kashmir' SET had the overseas theatrical distribution and home video rights in addition to the Satellite broadcasting rights. It is because they had the rights to the overseas home video that they released Lagaan and Mission Kashmir on DVD and VHS.
This deal does not give SET the rights to these films for overseas theatrical distribution or home video and that is why they cannot release DVDs of these films. By the way Eros holds the rights to most if not all these films for the overseas market.

PS: The two missed opportunities for us Indian movie lovers are 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Asoka'. SET was commited to buying the overseas rights including theatrical and home video release for both these films. But SET backed out at the last minute due to the losses suffered by them with 'Lagaan & Mission Kashmir'.
Also SET has the same deal (rights) for all Yash Raj Films, RK Films, Dharma Productions (Yash Johar) but you won't find any DVDs for these films released by Sony/Columbia either. THAT'S BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE RIGHTS TO DO SO.
