USA Films is releasing the DVD in the USA/Canada. The DVD will release after a while, as the movie is coming to cinema halls feb 22/02. Its best to wait for the official DVD as it will be of excellent quality. I'm going to watch to the movie in the cinema hall when it releases first.

Thats what i meant!! getting MAIN STREAM acclaim, that DID NOT HAPPEN with LAGAAN before OSCARS UNFORTUNATELY!! Do u know, how many people watch that programe and read their CRITIC reviews!!
IMO>MONSOON WEDDING is a simple film, very natural very authentic..VERY WELL DONE!!
BUTTTT! here it is! LAGAAN is a much bigger film, on much bigger scale and if marketed in mainstream should have gotten LARGER BUZZ!! I am still HOPEFULL!! for LAGAAN winning the OSCAR the way, AAMIR AND CT are PUSHING IT!!
Another thing, ABC>>GOOD MORNING AMERICA is doing OSCAR COUNTDOWN< I wish, AAMIR could manage by HOOK OR CROOK to get LAGAAN snippets played there every morning and should appear along with his director to talk and promote his film!! Is aamir listening!! I think he should be able to do that COURTESY CT!!! BUCK UP!! AAMIR!!

Ebert & Roper give Monsoon Wedding 2 thumbs up

I saw the episode last week on tv, and they loved Monsoon Wedding, it sounded like the highest praised movie of the week. Roger Ebert commented that Monsoon Wedding could well be the first Indian cross-over film into western mainstream cinema. Richard Rooper said that Monsoon Wedding is one of the best films he's seen in the last few years (he could be comparing its quality to CTHD, since he loved that film too). At the end, they sumed it up by saying that Non-Indians should just take this opportunity and go see different cinema for once, and by choosing Monsoon Wedding would be a wonderful choice, because no one would be disappointed, its one of the most entertaining films playing in cinema right now.
They've even praised this film more than Mel Gibsons "When We Were Soldiers".

The film was just released here in Dallas, and I went tonight to see it. They had traditional Indian dancers perform before the movie but I missed it. I don't know if it was bharatanatyam or another type of dance, but I saw the dancers walking around the theatre in their costumes. They also sold samosas in the lobby, and this is not a theater that plays only Indian films. I thought that was a rather nice touch. There was also a drawing to win the soundtrack CD and a poster. I should have gotten to the theater earlier!

I really liked the movie. It perfectly captured the atmosphere of a wedding and the events upto the wedding, and the story was for the most part well written. I think Mira Nair sometimes has trouble in her films with multiple storylines, giving more weight to a secondary story than necessary, and MW is no exception, but it did not hinder my enjoyment of the film.

Don't rent the pirate DVD, as this is one film you will want to see on the big screen and with lots of people in the theater with you.

Monsoon Wedding is now showing accross theaters in the US & Canada. It was released on the 22nd of February in the US on 2 screens and in it's second week of release it expanded to 11 screens. After generating the best per-theater average in North America two weeks running, USA Films' Monsoon Wedding expands into the top fifteen markets in its third week (8th March). The film has grossed over $300,000 from just 11 theaters and is expected to leap into the top 30 this weekend while still playing in limited release. It seems the ditributors are slowly expanding it's release nationwide and therefore if the film is not showing in your area yet, then it probably will soon.

In it's third week of release, USA Films' ensemble hit MONSOON WEDDING expanded from 11 to 76 theaters across North America and grossed $779,000, jumping into the Top 25. Mira Nair's Golden Globe & BAFTA (British equivalent of the Oscars) nominee for best foreign language film averaged a strong $10,250, the highest per screen average for the third straight week and raised its cume to $1.2M. Already playing in New York and Los Angeles, Monsoon Wedding added runs this weekend in San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Boston, and few other cities.
