Asoka's dvd in North American could turn out great.
However, Lagaan is a much better film.

First Look finally responded - and guess what – it’s not their official DVD version that’s being sold! :where:

Something very odd is happening with Asoka DVD is the states. First Look have said Asoka doesn’t release until April 23rd - hence it’s not appeared on any R1 stores (DVDEmpire have not got stock either, its an error on their part on the release date).

So which begs the question where did the Asoka DVD appear from that being sold on IW, IP, IB and others? ??? And how convenient was it coming a week after the Metrodome release, someone somewhere pulled a fast one :p

Can’t say I’m surprised though

For those that are still interested in the official version, First Look have said they are ‘contemplating’ changing the cover because of this fiasco.

Just got my copy of Asoka (Metrodome Region 0 PAL DVD) today and might I say, great job. You can add my vote for the Asoka DVD being better than the Lagaan DVD. Although I think in terms of audio quality the Lagaan DVD just outscores Asoka by a little.

By the way did anyone else notice that the DVD is not Region 2 but rather it is Region 0.

Ahhhh, I'm really confused now ??? . So here's a couple of questions:

1. The pirated First Look one that's out, is that version similar to the Metrodome version in quality? I know it's unlikely, but when someone does get it, do report on the quality. Still hoping for a miracle :stupid: .

2. Is there going to be a R1 release by an Indian DVD company of Asoka in the future or are we stuck with the cut version by First Look? Another words, is there going to be an uncut R1 version in the future?

3. Regarding the Metrodome release, I understand it's R0 PAL. I'm not sure if my dvd player can play PAL. I checked the manual, and it's not an issue they address. They assume that since they are in the US, it'll be playing NTSC. Is PAL compatibility a common feature on base models. My dvd player is one of the earlier Panasonic models (A120 to be specific), so I'm not sure if it would play the Metrodome version. Is there anyway to check without actually buying a PAL dvd or does anyone know if I'll be able to play it?

Thanks.

Sorry buddy if you bought your player in the US and it is a region 1 player then you are out of luck. Since your player can only play NTSC DVDs. One of the few things we in Asia and Europe have an advantage over the US is the fact that almost all DVD players sold here are capable of playing PAL & NTSC DVDs. Also most TVs sold here are capable of playing both formats. By the way, even if your DVD player was capable of playing PAL, it is unlikely that you have a TV (if bought in the US) that can play PAL. Hollywood really made a mess of DVDs with the PAL, NTSC and Region coding requirements. Originally DVDs were to have no native format and it would be upto the player to determine whether it outputs NTSC or PAL. But Hollywood insisted in their licencing agreement with the DVD consortium that they not only incorporate Region coding but also retain the NTSC and PAL legacy problem from the analog days of video. Ironically the other digital video format, albeit obsolete and much inferior technology of VCDs do not have this problem. All VCDs can be played in all players worldwide. It is the VCD player that determines whether NTSC or PAL is output to the TV. This mess is because the bums from Hollywood did not have a say in the development of VCDs. A great opportunity to finally unite the world with one DVD standard was scuttled due to the greed of the studios. As for the Asoka DVD being Region 0, unfortunately that has relevance only for the different PAL regions.

i presume that the quality of the First Look Pictures pirated version will be almost the exact same as the metrodome version as they probably ripped it from the metrodome version....im just presuming here,i dont actually have it,but isnt it perculiar that it released soon after the metrodome release?could only point to one thing..

Little bit more on info on this new Asoka DVD. I don’t know if this can be called a pirate. According to First Look the producers of Asoka made an 'erroneously' deal to put out this version of Asoka onto the market. So depending on who you get the story from this can be called an official DVD.

I'm guessing this DVD out now might be the full uncut version, as First Look Picture only have rights to the 'two-song-missing-international' version of Asoka. But not too sure on this. First Look also told me they have recalled all these DVDs and as they are being advertised as being from First Look Pictures, makes it all the more dubious.

Politics and legal ramblings aside (let First Look and other parties deal with that) – all we want to know quality of the DVD and if its complete. At the moment I’ve no idea who authored this DVD or what the quality is like – but like I said I did order it from IW. I also sent them email saying if its not the official First Look version as advertised on their site then I don’t want it. But I think I was too late with that request as I got an email confirmation saying they’ve shipped it this morning (but they have been known to take out DVDs after they have been shipped in the past! ) – so I await and see if I get it and if I do I’ll let guys know what the deal is with this.

Speculate (to make things more confusing :p ): if this DVD has been re-authored by someone typically used to other Indian DVDs (SuperDigital, Media Dimensions or even DEI) then it will certainly disappoint most. But if this DVD is re-mastered from Metrodome source (which brings up more copyright issue problems! ) – this could be half decent depending on how the PAL to NTSC conversion has been handled – I’m assuming that its been ‘handled’ :doze:

http://indianwatchdog.netfirms.com/cons ... soka2.html seems to think its legit firstlp dvd

'Asoka has released on DVD by First Look Pictures for the USA/Canada. The DVD is region one encoded for the USA/Canada.'

it pathetic the attitude given to indian dvds and wouldn’t it be a crying shame when more and more indian dvds release from major r1 labels given at least above average dvds LOL!! i guess it wont be crying shame after all :p

I thought we were supposed to get something by columbia tristar/sony.
I don't want the cut version. Should I go buy this version, or should I wait in case an uncut version might come out?
