Recently the market is fooded with single layer pressed DVDs which have been ripped from the original DVD. They have artwork which is the same but obviously copied

Could you check the size of the DVD

I have seen this with the Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya and Parineetha DVDs

It is a single layered dvd. I was so mad I returned it back by todays evening mail.

Dvddhamaka sent me an original version today. Well I feel so sorry for the customers ( quite a lot of them) who cannot make out the difference between the original and pirated. Couple of years back you could also count me in that list. Thanks to zulm.net I am a customer who is more aware.

I just wish DVD makers like YashRaj, UTV and others join Zulm as well. They will get to know the "true face" of their distributors and will also help them understand what we expect in a "DVD"

Wow!

An excellent DVD by UTV.

Progressive, Anamorphic, DD 5.1 @ 448 kbps.
Video bit rate varies bet 3 mbps to 8 or even 9 mbps. Mostly 4.5 mbps but higher bit rate for colorfull, as well as, motion scenes.

(Not seen extras disc yet)

They also showed a commercial of Munnabhaii MMG, with same PQ and same Progressive encoding. VVC's Mission Kashmir, Parineeta, Munnabhai MMG (hopefully) Progressive, what happened to Munnabhaii MBBS??
(Some VVC's DVDs by DEI/ BEI are Progressive too.)
--------------------------------------
What other UTV DVDs are Progressive??

I think said coming next summer?

Well, lets see what UTV DOES TO VIRUDDH DVD NOW?

UTV Virudh is back to Indian Standards. No Prineeta quality.

Parineeta sets milestones for Indian Home Entertainment
By IndiaFM News Bureau, September 28, 2005 - 00:01 IST

Parineeta is set to revolutionize home entertainment in the country. The DVD of the classic from the Vidhu Vinod Chopra camp was released by actor Saif Ali Khan on 11th September. Says Saif Ali Khan, “The DVD with its brilliant features like the Director’s Commentary showcases the growing consumer expectation. The packaging pertinently reflects the flavour of the film” The actor also reiterated his stand against piracy by stating its impact on the economy and its contribution to larger crimes.

The DVD from Excel Home Videos is packed with additional features, some of which have never been seen in the Indian market. Says M.N Kapasi, Managing Director, Excel Home Videos,” The DVD is the first in the country with DTS Sound, enabling high quality audio output on all kinds of systems creating a cinematic experience for viewers. It also has a Director’s Commentary by Pradeep Sarkar(an option of an audio track of the Director running parallel with the film explaining the running scene), which is again a first in India”.

Adds Vidhu Vinod Chopra,"This endeavor is an apt tribute to the classic tale, and with a presentation from Pradeep Sarkar on the light and shade treatment in movie making and an option for subtitles covering most major Indian languages, this is definitely a collectors edition for connoisseurs of quality cinema". The DVD has subtitles in 15 languages including English, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Gujarati among others. The DVD also has the making of the movie and a teaser trailer of Munnabhai -2 in addition to a candid interview with Saif Ali Khan. It also has views from stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan on the classic.

Parineeta, an adaptation from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Novel of the same name is a story of an orphan girl and her unspoken relationship with her rich childhood companion, which comes to the foreground on the arrival of an outsider into their lives. The movie has its setting in Calcutta of the 1960’s and the recreation of the time has been carried out with astounding detailing. The movie directed by Pradeep Sarkar, a veteran with Ad films and Music Videos, has Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan and newcomer Vidya Balan in the lead. The script of the movie was recently selected to be a permanent fixture at the Oscar Library.

Okay, now I wanna know which one's better on the whole. :o

I watched the origjnal Parineeta DVD yesterday. It's the best Indian DVD I have seen so far concerning image quality. And that includes all DEI DVDs. The picture is very film like with good detail and practically zero digital artifacts EXCEPT there is aliasing in some shots most likely due to insufficient vertical filtering during downconversion from the HD master. You can see it best on the steps of the stairs in the house. The horizontal lines show the problem clearly a couple of times. Overall quality is very satisfying. This is a must buy. Buying the pirate has no justification. This is quality that must be supported by a purchase.
Swades on the other hand by UTV as well is the same mediocre artifact ridden stuff we get 95% of the time.
Concerning the German DVDs by Rapid Eye I have changed my mind a bit, K3G is awful, but the rest I sampled is not that awful (Dil Se, KKHH, MHN). They go for a (very) soft look so compression is not a problem, and the colors are not right at times, but the picture is progressive and pretty free of distracting pixelisation so widespread on Indian DVDs.

Did you notice, though, that the KKHH DVD had a really bad problem with dropped frames? It's most noticable at the start of the title song - compare it with the YRF DVD and the German one looks like it's being played in slow motion.

I only sampled 10 minutes or so of the titles so I don't know how well the rest holds up.

I am not sure I understand what you mean... DTS is audio -- it has nothing to do with video and hence... what shots are you asking for?

Sorry for confusion, my point was the crappiest pq excel churns out DTS does not matter it might be pseudo DTS 5.1 with just logo.

Meenaxi/Parineeta were both Prog dvds, and Parineeta had PQ to be one of the best ever, way better than meenaxi though!

I purchased one of Excel dvd and believe me!! My stomach is still upset!!

I think, you guys in India will be better off even with DVD5 version of Originals from overseas, dupes will be  8)
These are my humble 2 cents as I saw Prices of these Excel crap is not under $1

more so, even if same transfer as UTV with DD and dts(if true) ON THE SAME DISC PLUS EXTRAS WILL SCREW UP PQ TO SOME EXTENT!

agreed.

NewDeep, the concern here is the picture quality, not the sound quality because we can all live with good Dolby Digital surround but we cannot live with bad eye straining video!

I regularly order DVDs from around the world - Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, U.S., U.K., and Korea. Like you, I like good video transfers and good audio and undertstand the nuances of aliasing, progressive scans, cropping etc.

Believe me, Excel Hollywood releases are as good as those in the U.S. such as by Warner Brothers and Paramount etc. Simply fantastic in terms of both video and audio. Excel certainly have failed in the past vis-a-vis Bollywood, but Parieneeta is a step in the right direction. The picture as well as audio are very well done.
