Not the reference quality material (that I was looking for :( ) - but nevertheless still a good DVD - these are my first impressions – had a quick glace;

Not the cleanest print used – if you noticed blemishes and stuff on Lagaan DVD – then Asoka seem a little worse in that department. Colours don’t have that vibrancy about them – seem slightly dull – but look natural. And the sharpness of the video could have better. Good PAL progressive source transfer, decent sharpness (but again should have better) and average contrast.

Includes Hindi 5.1 and Tamil 2.0 sound tracks – how many Indian films should be! Other extras: trailer, song selection (yes for many! ), 2 making of documentaries (making of Asoka and Making of Asoka: The Big Fight, image gallery with Radio advert sound bed and main cast biographies and director filmography.

Hindi soundtrack is excellent 5.1, dynamic and lively.

This is going to come as disappointment to some – it’s not good as Lagaan DVD from what I looked at but nevertheless is still a very good DVD that will put the rest of the Indian to shame.

More later...

..many stores listed within. I ordered it from http://www.bensonsworld.co.uk/ but I don’t know if they do international shipping.

BTW is the DVD is region 0 PAL - so make sure your DVD players can play PAL discs (and also TVs).

Just got my copy from my mate and I must say the DVD is not bad, but the source used was a bit poor, and dark details wasn't as strong as they were on the big screen. I agree with Ali in that this disc is not as good as the Lagaan DVD, but it is a decent attempt to bring Hindi films to a mainstream audience, just a shame it had to be Asoka! Anyway I look forward to the March release of The Terrorist (Santosh Sivan's finest Tamil film). Its now avalible to pre-order on play247.com.

Also it looks like filmfour might be doing the DVD of Monsoon Wedding, but will confirm that real soon! If they will then expect a great DVD similar to East is East!

HOw many Indian DVDs really are reference quality? In my opinion, 'NONE' so far. Therefore anything better than the crap being put out by 'Video Sound, Eros etc' is more than welcome.

For me that in itself is more than enough. Over the yrs there have been a few Hindi DVDs with atleast reasonable video quality, but when it comes to Audio quality, other than Lagaan and maybe 1 or 2 other titles, the less said the better. Even when there is a proper 5.1 soundtrack the dynamics of the sound leaves much to be desired.

hi Sunny! i saw part of terrorist over here in usa!! original dvd!! it is unbelievable quality and cinematography and picture, mind blowing!!
I personally feel with all give and take, Asoka had still the best cinematography for 2002.period!! that u can compare to a hollywood flick quality! and it should win!! there are few other good ones too! but my vote is for asoka in this category!! but terrorist is even better!

Review up;

http://www.zulm.net....order=0

..toss up between 7 or 8 out 10 because of the slight disappointment in the video department - but I think the extras and excellent audio make up for it - more 7.5 more than 8!
