i was WAITING finally for screen review: Sur - The Melody Of Life A star is born Cast & Credits Producer: Fish Eye Network/ Rangita Pritish Nandy Director: Tanuja Chandra Music: MM Kreem Cast: Lucky Ali, debutant Gauri Karnik and Simone Singh Though umpteen films have touched on the teacher-student relationship and the resulting ego tussle, Tanuja Chandra’s story is still “different” enough to spark off some interest. And Lucky Ali, with his earnest performance and soulful singing, makes it a must-see.
Music icon Vikramaditya Singh cuts records and runs a music school where he trains only the best of talents. He is helped by his friend-and-silent-lover Divya, and his man-Friday Herman in running of the academy. Vikramaditya is on a lookout for a protege whom he can pass his musical legacy to. He stumbles upon a prodigy, Tina Marie, in a church and decides to groom her to take his place.
Vikramaditya is an encouraging and inspiring teacher till he realises that his student has the talent to outshine him. Insecure, envious, resentful and drained of his creativity, he does the unthinkable: he steals Tina’s composition and passes it off it as his own to the music company. Shocked, Tina Marie can’t believe that her idol could do this to her and leaves school to enter a convent. Egged on by his voice of conscience, Divya, Vikramaditya admits that he had cheated Tina, and resolves to redeem himself and make Tina a star.
The film has a slow pace. A crisper editing and a taut narration would have kept the viewer’s interest from sagging. The unconventional ending is another issue.
Dialogue by Vibha Singh are inspiring and touch the heart, especially when Vikramaditya is trying to bolster Tina’s confidence saying, “Nobody can insult you unless you allow them to. You’re special and you should realise it. Say the words ‘Main sabse behtar hoon...’.”
Of the cast, Simone Singh as Divya is restrained, and Achint Kaur as the music company executive lives her brief role. Divya Dutta as Tina Marie’s sister tends to go overboard. Harsh Vashisht as Vikramaditya’s man-Friday Herman is effective.
Debutant Gauri Karnik who plays Tina Marie has a long way to go.
Lucky Ali, in his first major film role, bowls you over with his heartfelt sincerity. In a role which is very close to real life, he manages to convey a range of emotions — from easy self-confidence and paternal pride to insecurity and anger, from loss, pain and guilt, to cleansing love, supreme sacrifice and tortured memories — with the comfortable ease of a veteran. It’s his eyes which do all the talking, and his unassuming personality adds to the charm.
The other hero of the film is MM Kreem’s soul-stirring music, and each of the compositions touch you. Nida Fazli’s lyrics have an endearing simplicity, and Lucky’s “feeling” voice makes the numbers unforgettable. Sur is certainly worth a dekko.
