What is the RUN TIME (equivalent film @ 24 fps) for different versions of ASOKA:

Zulm Review of Metrodome ASOKA DVD (PAL) states its run time to be 169 min. As PAL undoubtedly runs 4% faster, it translates into 176 min film length.

One pirate version that I rented (NTSC) is 160 min long. I don’t know if it had been speed shifted by 4% if mastered from film to PAL and then to NTSC.

The official version for Region 1, First Look ASOKA (NTSC) will be released on April 23rd and is supposed to be 150 min long. Don’t know if this version will run 4% faster, like PAL? It is supposed to be direct film to NTSC conversion and hence should be excellent print for Region 1, not speed shifted, heavily trimmed though.

I will be interested in finding the differences in the different versions. If someone, with access to other versions of ASOKA, is willing to contribute to this, then I will post various time-sequence markers from the 150 min pirate version that I can get hold of. This should result in finding various ASOKA versions’ run time, speed shift, portions cut, --- etc.

BTW, as the official R1 version will be carried by the mainstream Canadian stores (Future Shop, HMV etc), I will buy this DVD and return it if it happens to be converted from PAL. (Film Converted from PAL and then to NTSC DVD is a genuine reason for return).

I saw this First Look DVD here in Singapore. The strange thing is that it only states Dolby Surround on the jacket. That officially does not mean Dolby Digital. So is the sound 5.1 or not?

Now you mention it - it could be DVD Planet and DVD Empire have just taken specs from the covers - don't know where the 4:3 video came from ???

I actually have the this First Look DVD that’s being sold at the moment at Indiaweekly and other places and it does have proper 5.1 track - I think it's dual track with surround sound too - someone else has this DVD at the moment, so will do a more fuller review once I get it back. I was waiting around to see if another version appeared - which at the moment is still not clear if it’s a going to be a different version or the same.

Just for info, for people who are looking to buy the new 'official' First Look release, there are a few subtle differences on the cover of Asoka, apart from the big white sticker on front saying “Subtitled in English”

Image

The only difference on the back cover are the "Rated R" and the white box op top "DVD features" is not on the ‘erroneous’ First Look release being sold currently at Indiaweekly, Indiaplaza, etc.

As for the actual video & sound, well that remains to be seen if it is any different.

What is the duration of this First Look version of the asoka DVD? Will it be shorter or same as the original theatrical film?

Hi,

the version what I've got from FirstLookMedia:
On the cover's written : 150 min, but the movie is 167 min.

And the version what I've got has also Making of Asoka:The Big Fight !

Mugambo got his in the mail yesterday from Buy.com and this DVD is TERRIBLE! The audio is in Dolby Stereo and has no surround channels. The video is not much better than the pirate copy, although it is anamorphic. Too much edge enhancement, too sharp, speckled, splotches, motion artifacts and combing.

It is worse than a current EROS DVD.

Mugambo is very dissapointed.

yeah the cheap price at Indiaweekly is the dilemma.

Should we (who can only play R1 NTSC discs) get this pirate version, which has a decent, not so bad anamorphic transfer with good 5.1, or get the official R1 version, which MIGHT be anamorphic but could be fullscreen, and could possibly be cut.

Any advice???

ok, can more people confirm that this new version is NOT in 5.1??

Looks like the Indiaweekly version is way better than this one.

okay... i'm a bit confused:

I am UK resident, but did not buy the ASOKA DVD when it came out due to the following comment by Sharan:
http://www.zulm.net....l=asoka

ie, that the R1 release "Director's Cut" may allow viewing without the songs.... I don't want to discuss if the songs make or break the movie, that is a personal choice, but having the option allows all their preference.

So, is the R1 "director's cut" release able to skip songs ?
Is there any difference between the offical R1 DVD and R2 DVD?
What is the definitive ASOKA DVD to buy ?
Finally, where can I get them from in the UK: cdguru?, play, ?

Please help me on this one.
