The reason is simple. Independent of the quality of the product taking it without paying is simply theft and morally wrong. You can still express your disapproval by not buying, watching on (legal) TV, in the cinema and with (legal) renting which are all fine and don't make you ignore copyrights. Once you declare (justified) copyright as a function of product quality you are on a very slippery slope as quality is subjective and has not really anything to do with property rights. People download beause they want more for less, preferably nothing. Quality is just a fig leave to justify the wrong doing. It also does in no way promote better quality. The only thing that promotes better quality is buying good quality and not buying bad quality (which does not require downloading to see it anyway as they are legal means to see without buying the DVD).
