IMDB says Refugee theatrical runtime is 207 minutes.

BBFC says the same for the theatrical runtime - 207 minutes & 26 secs (2 second "headbutt" cut).

BBFC also says that the PAL DVD in U.K. is 193 minutes & 2 secs. This is clearly LESS THAN a 4% speedup on 207 minutes...

A speedup version of 207 minutes should be close to 200 minutes -- interestingly, both Gold and the pirate have this runtime.

:?:

In my Dec 6, 2005 post on page 1 of this thread, I did compare, sec by sec, the 201 min pirate version and the YRF Progressive version that's 189 min. There was no speed difference. For sure, YRF 24 fps version is not 4% sped up, so the pirate version is not speed up either.

If the 199 min Gold version really is Film to PAL, and is 4% speed up then it's equivalent to 207 min, i.e. 6 min more than previously avail 201 min version.

Is the Gold version really 4% speed up ?? Or may be it's Film to NTSC to PAL transfer, using field averaging, in which case it's not 4% speed up.

Gold Refugee DVD is NTSC format, not PAL...

Let me do some R&D and reply...

Stupid Question---is it possible to do Film-to-PAL-to-NTSC? What happens to runtime in such transfers? Could Gold DVD be this?

Thanks :)

PAL to NTSC transfers ae done all the time. But, it degrades picture quality for sure. Converting 50 fields per sec of PAL to 60 fields per sec of NTSC requires a few fields to be repeated or all fields averaged as is mostly done.

If the film to PAL transfer was done using 4% speed up, it will be passed on to NTSC in most of the transfers (field averaging).

It's possible and is done sometimes, 4% speed up transfer can be converted to NTSC by sorting out 24 film frames per sec from PAL transfer and then encoding to NTSC Progressive or Pseudo Progressive. 4% speed up of PAL will be converted back to orig speed. Picture quality too will be better.

Moserbaer has just released Refugee on dvd in India -- this runs 199 minutes (which is 207 minutes at 4% speedup) -- though NTSC.

As such moserbaer and gold dvds may be the same transfer...

On Saturday 10-Dec, two satellite T.V. stations telecast the full length REFUGEE --- Star One and Star Gold.

(This included an additional scene where Jackie and BSF inspect the Rann terrain to find footsteps going towards Pak but not coming back. They then lay a trap. This happens before Jackie shoots Abhishek.)

GOLD has released REFUGEE DVD in India... it appears to be the uncut version! I bought a copy :-)

Video Transfer - Average quality; Non-anamorphic & slightly cropped :-(

Audio - Very good 5.1 Dolby Digital :-)

Subtitles - English

Format - NTSC

Runtime - 199 minutes NTSC (seems to be from a PAL master); Has all the scenes missing from the YRF DVD.

MRP - Rs.299
