Yes, meant 1080p, that was a typo that has been corrected.
Also the 40,000-60,000 hours is the quote for half brightness. The 20,000-30,000 quote is from like 2-3 years ago; plasma technology has come a long way since then.
As for black levels, yes they aren't as good as CRT Tube TV's, but they represent the best compromise between black level and size. None of the rear projections (CRT, DLP, LCOS, LCD) have decent black levels, so plasmas are certainly better than those (Panasonic being the best in the dept.). LCD tubes are still horrible in this category. And for tube, the biggest widescreen available is 34" and biggest overall is going to be the 36" 4x3 (since the Sony 40" is going out of production). 34" was too small for me, but if it works for you, the Sony XBR910 has awesome picture quality because of the SuperFine dot pitch technology with double the resolution. But if size matters, plasma is the best option unless your environment suits a front projection system.
