Among the best, I would include the excellent thriller 'Road'. I would put Company as the best film of the year and Devdas a close runner up.
Concerning "Road" I have a mixed impression. It's original for Bollywood I have heard, but not at all for me. The road film with a psycho killer hunting someone else has been done to death in Western cinema, starting with Spielberg's "Duel". I found the film
occasionally interesting, funny, even creepy, but that was largely due
to Bajpai's good performance. The 3 leads are all good, but the script is lacking. Two songs should be cut right away, the usual police
shenanigans get rid of and the ending debollywoodized.
Another problem is the shameless copying of the background score
(a bit "The Rock" here, a bit "Speed" there, some Bernard Herrman
for good measure...
). The intentions to be different are good,
but the execution is still lacking. And what's that obsession with referencing other Bollywood films (Devdas,Gadar,Company)?
