Well i wouldnt call that a copy... but surely it was inspired...
SOM had the backdrop of Nazis and Austria which was all relevant politically. Parichay was a contemprorary retelling of that story... and he cleverly reversed the roles... Jeetendra playing the role of Julie Andrews !

For obvious reasons using the Nazis and Austria as a backdrop for a Hindi film was out of the question, but the fact remains that the film was copied from Sound Of Music. If changing a few things here and there and reversing of the female character to that of a male makes it an original then a lot of the work of these other mentioned directors also would not qualify as a copy.

More than a copy I would prefer to look at it as an adaptation....if plays can be adapted from one language to the other why not movies.....and by jove it was one wallop of an adaptation....In a similar vein then calling ANGOOR a 'copy' of A COMEDY OF ERRORS (or DO DOONI CHAAR) would be poor form....

In any case stories can be retold....so long as they are told refreshingly how does it matter....we would then be deriding the great work of all films such as even SHOLAY which was really speaking an adaptation of SEVEN SAMURAI or SEETA AUR GEETA (from RAM AUR SHYAM) and such.....

When a copy is simply a copy for copying sake without adding any more value or zing to the telling is when it really sucks.....

in any case my 2 cents worth...

Ya Aarkayne, you spoke wisely... It is an adaptation... R&H adapted that from the source as Dragun has pointed out...

Can someone accuse Shyam Benegal for "copying" the Mahabharat ? (Trikaal ) ?.. He adpated it to a more contemprorary setting.

However...

Chori Chori was a direct take from It Happened one night and so also was Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin

Mushir Riyaaz another copycat... (7 brides for 7 brothers... becomes Satte Pe Satta... what a loser  )

You mean KALYUG ofcourse....TRIKAAL to my mind was a completely original tale of a Portuguese family in the days of the Goa liberation.....another terrific movie and with Lucky Ali debuting as long ago as that !!

Mushir Riaz had nothing to do with the flm Satte Pe Satta. The film was produced by N.N Sippy and directed by Raj N. Sippy. Mushir Riaz by the way never directed any film, he was only a producer and as a matter of fact he produced some nice films for eg. Khamoshi, Safar, Mehbooba, Shakti, Rajput, Apne Paraye, Virasat. Ram Balram was another film produced by Mushir Riaz, but I would not categorize that as a nice film.
