I would assume that since they're handling business in America that they also have rights to DVD distribution in America.

Dunno, RNJBond. Sony Pictures Classics is distributing Lagaan for its cinematic release, but Columbia Tristar's the DVD maker. (Unless the two are somehow related...)

Sony Pictures Classics is an independent/foreign distribution arm of Columbia Pictures. Like what Fine Line is to New Line, Fox Searchlight is to 20th Century Fox, or Miramax is to Buena Vista.

Are there any films being released under the Tristar banner anymore these days?

Simran you are forgetting something

LAGAAN->Sony Entertainment Television ->SONY <- Columbia Tri-Star

Sony Classics

They are not really independent. You wont "technically" get a Sony Classics film on DVd released by say Paramount ! (It will inevitably be released on a CTHV DVD). Hope this clears the confusion :)

Another source indicating that Devdas has been picked up by Focus International for Worldwide rights.
http://www.outlookindia.com/full.as....9&sid=1
"Trade reports indicate that the world rights of Devdas have been sold to Focus International. With all its Indianness in content and style, this is a film that could show the way to winning major box office earnings at home and lucrative audiences abroad.

MMMmmmmm As m/f Simran has stated... I am willing to wait till the end of December to grab a côpy of the Universal Authored DVD !!!!!!!!! Oh Boy this is gonna be the wait of the year :) ( Much more than waiting for a Gal to respond to your PROPOSAL :D )...

Incidently Universal /Dreamworks is the only Company (along with 20th century Fox) which brings out DVDs having an excellent DTS soundtrack and if MK is any indication DEVDAS also will have an English soundtrack !!!

Boy I guess I was right on traget when I predicted that DEVDAS will find a Hollywood Buyer :)

MK was released by Columbia Tristar and Devdas is (theoretically) going to be released by Universal, so I don't see why there will necessarily be an English track.

I seriously hope Universal releases Devdas on DVD, but we don't have any indication of that yet, so let's not get our hopes up.

This Focus hocus pocus is seriously out of focus - Eros still have this film - although PB news item mentioned "Bhansali has even more bigger plans for the film. Bhansali is trying to release the film worldwide overseas simultaneously. They are in the process of acquiring an American distributor to release the film in American theatres on the same day it will hit Indian theatres, July 12th"
