After box-office debacles like Dushman, Sangharsh and Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar, Sur stands to be Tanuja Chandra's fourth attempt at direction. Unlike her earlier films that had violent themes and content, Sur explores the bond between the student and the music teacher. The film begins with a young girl attempting to learn the piano, but in vain. Her music teacher takes over and teaches her how to play it. "You can do it," he says. "No I can never be like you. I can never be as good as you," she cries and rushes out of the palatial home. The incident triggers off memories of the past. About the days when his favourite student had said the same things.

Vikramaditya Singh (Lucky Ali), is passionate singer and musician, who runs a music school in Ooty. He hopes to pass on this legacy but has not yet met anybody who shares his passion. There's Simone Singh who has been with Singh for eight years and loves him deep down. There is also the loyal servant who is more of a confidante than a servant.


Vikramaditya Singh has just cracked a major deal with a music company and is on his way back to Ooty when he happens to come across a church. In the group of girls who busy with their choir practise, he spots Tina Marie (Gauri Karnik). Her voice leaves him impressed. He wants to enroll her as his student and make her a star. Taking her under his tutelage, he constantly encourages her to think that nobody is better than her. But Singh's attitude of encouragement and motivation soon turns to jealousy and envy when he realises that Tina can score better tunes than him despite the fact that she has no formal training in music . What further burns him up is when the music company shows more interest in Tina than him. The music company authorities insist that he record the album with Tina.

But on the recording day Tina is shocked when she hears her teacher singing not only the tune she has invented but also behaving rudely and nastily with her when she attempts to sing on the mike. Worse, he blames her for being an embarrassment and not an asset to his school. "You can never be a singer! You can never be a star," he says with a vicious attitude.

Tina leaves and returns to her hometown Goa. Vikramaditya Singh cannot ignore the guilt that gnaws him deep down. He decides to go to Goa and get Tina back. When he reaches there, he is shocked to learn that Tina has given up music completely and has decided to lead a life of a nun. He brings music back into her life and convinces to do a live concert with him. But on the day the live concert is to be performed, Singh deliberately chooses to be away so that all the limelight is showered on Tina. When she later goes to thank her teacher and tells him that together they will entertain people from all over the world, Vikramaditya Singh reminds her that it she who will that alone. He will not be besides her. Their paths were different!

The film concludes on the young girl learning to play the piano successfully. She thanks her master. While Singh puffed with pride thinks about the success his favourite student Tina has achieved.

Music director MM Kreem's tunes are passable. Except for Aabhi ja... the other numbers do not remain with you. Director Tanuja Chandra has deftly handled the script and got good performances out of her artistes.

Simone Singh has turned out a noteworthy performance. Sadly, one can't the same about the leading lady Gauri Karnik. She has miles to go before she can be labelled as an actress. Even the comic scenes, Karnik's performance fails to evoke any laughter. She is better in the second half of the film.

To her credit, she can carry off subtle parts better than loud scenes which are demanded by the character in the first half of the film.

Among the cast, the one actor who stands out is Lucky Ali. He suits the role of the teacher to the hilt. Chandra could not have thought of any other actor in his place. Lucky Ali is Sur and Sur is Lucky Ali!

Bigger Picture


If there is anything going for Sur - The Melody of Life, it is the film's steadfast abjuration of the masala movie formula. It is not a stale boy-meets-girl rigmarole nor is it all about loving your parents and siblings. But for all its narrative novelty, it is no less facile in its portrayal of human emotions.

Sur is a music-laden drama that revolves around the mercurial relationship between a middle-aged singer and his favourite understudy. The film demonstrates what happens to a seemingly good plot idea when it is dumbed down beyond reasonable limits -- it goes completely off-key.

Texturally, Sur is quite impressive. Cinematogrpaher Nirmal Jani's camera is wonderfully fluid, while the backdrops - especially the Goa and Ooty outdoors - exude a soothing feel. Textually, though, the film rarely strikes the right notes. Director Tanuja Chandra's screenplay lacks emotional conviction. The lines sound platitudinous, if not outright corny, and the situations are as vacuous as they are vapid.

This Melody of Life is afflicted by the malady of lifelessness. If the somnolent pace isn't bad enough, the script heaps cliché upon insufferable cliché to erect an edifice that looks pretty dainty from the outside but is totally hollow within.

Vikramaditya Singh (Lucky Ali) is a loner and a legend. He runs a music academy in Ooty for up and coming singers. He chances upon barmaid and choirgirl Tina Marie D'Silva (Gauri Karnik) on a drive through Goa and flips for her natural talent. He resolves to take her under his wings and groom her as his successor.

But as the sprightly girl reveals her true elements, Vikram is filled with jealousy and indulges in a show of one-upmanship. Heart-broken, the girl heads for a nunnery in search of solace. Not to worry, Vikram is assailed by a sense of remorse soon enough. He now wants to get Tina back to her true calling. It adds up to too much ado about too little.

The narrative is riddled with gaping holes. Vikram's sudden burst of envy is barely explained. Ditto his subsequent change of heart. But those are minor flaws compared to the one that lies at the very heart of the film - in its music. The kind of sounds the male protagonist produces makes you wonder why bright, talented young people should be falling over each other to learn the ropes from him. The Sur music sets the feet tapping occasionally, but it never ever touches the soul. A musical without stirring numbers is much like a flag mast without a flag.

Is Lucky Ali the actor better than Lucky Ali the singer? Really, there isn't much to choose between the two. Newcomer Gauri Karnik, on her part, seems too eager to make an impression. She goes over the top in the bargain. Simone Singh, in what is essentially a walk-on part despite its misleading length, turns in a competent performance as the hero's long-time associate. But in a film where the bar is set extremely low, that isn't much of a feat.

I personally love the music of Sur.............although now I'm beginning to feel that I have a different taste in music to the rest of the world!!!
First I absolutely hate the music of Dil Hai Tumhara - recycled crap by Nadeem Shravan in my opinion - and all the movie critics say that the songs are melodious :angry: :stupid: :baaa: :ffs:
Then I adore the album of Sur (I think it's one of the best albums this year) and the critics call the music passable!!!

Am I alone here????

I am wth u BIG TIME!

Music of SUR! is SUPERB!

I would rank, DEVDAS and SUR as the BEST albums, this year!

DHT, I was NOT moved by the MUSIC but was more OPTIMISTIC about fILM!

SUR!! Music is EXCELLENT!
Film: I wont bet my money on dat! as NEW COMERS, DIFFICULT roles, UNCONVENTIONAL plot!, SINGER, trying to CARRY film on his SHOULDER?

**** How the SONGS been filmed, placed in the fILM, leaves a BIG impact on making the MUSIC IMMORTALIZED! VISUAL impact is EXTREMELY important.
Other wise GOOD music, e.g TJCG, KDNK, FILHAAL, ASOKA, AKS, etc, DIES ITS OWN DEATH, without a TRACE!

and with GOOD VISUALS< GOOD PLACEMENT, a PASSABLE, MEDIOCRE EFFORT, becomes a PHENOMENON, e.g..MOHABTAEN, KKKG, MYKSH.., I wont put MDK in same league, I THOUGHT songs were better listen than SEE!!

TANJUJA CHANDRA, not VERY SUCCESSFUL in film MAKING! What MUSIC can doo?? on its own, and even the ONE! ADORED by THE TRUE ONES, mostly!

IF Lucky Ali, will be AS GOOD as he was in SINGING for this FILM, he has DONE his job!
If the DIRECTOR does not know, how to handle, GOOD plots, films, then it is GOING to be a DISASTER in BAD hands! :baaa:

I agree with arsh and bhaskar.. The music of Sur is very good.... the kind of songs u continue listening for a long time.. i don't think the film will do very well due to its unconventional subject and kinda unknown star cast.
but i am sure it will be appreciated.

Hmmmmmm...I just thought the music of Sur was average. I usually like Lucky Ali's tunes, however I was slightly let down with this one.

But I will concur with everyone.. Of the few albums this year that I repeatedly listen to and still never tire out !

Sur is probably the most underrated album of the year. My top 5 would be something like this (not in order):

1) Devdas
2)Humraaz
3)Sur
4)Kaante
5)Raaz

Raaz is one of the few decent N-S soundtracks imo.

Sur: A melodious tune
Music and Lucky Ali make the film worth watching:

Sur may not be rousing fare for the front-benchers, but it is a worthy attempt at exploring love and jealousy from a fresh angle. The film does a good job of taking you through the three hours without the usual hero-heroine singing-around-the-trees routine. However, the end leaves one unsatisfied. After the build-up, music and emotions, the film ends abruptly.





It is said that 'music does not a movie make'. Nevertheless, if it did have to bank on just its music, Sur -- The Melody of Life has already scored high marks. To the credit of the director Tanuja Chandra, the film is raised a notch with credible performances from the actors.

Lucky Ali makes a comeback with this film (his debut being Shyam Benegal's Trikaal in 1985) while Gauri Karnik makes her film debut. Sur deals with a teacher's journey to find his best student and the subsequent dilemma he faces when he finds one who threatens to overshadow him.

To the writer-director's credit, the film keeps its focus on the two characters --- Vikram and Tina. The romantic overtone is kept minimal, paying more attention to the strong teacher-pupil relationship. It then goes on to explore Vikram's conflicting emotions as he realises that there can be someone better than him.

Karnik makes a positive impact in her first leading role. In the beginning, she is portrayed as a nervous teenager trying to come to terms with her talent. Later, with the encouragement of her teacher, she blossoms into her own. The song, Dil mein jaage dhadkan aise reflects the character of Tina --- young, upbeat and perky. Apparently, she learnt how to the play the violin in three months, so that her moves did not look contrived.

The supporting cast --- Simone Singh, Divya Dutta, Harsh Vashisht and Achint Kaur (chain smoking record company creative head) --- also make their presence felt.

MM Kreem and Nida Fazli come up with good compositions and lyrics including the catchy Dil mein jaage, the soulful Khoya hai tune jo ae dil and the theme song, Aa bhi jaa, well rendered by the voices of Lucky Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan. The choir song is sung by Marijke Desouza while Mahalakshmi ably brings the film to an end with Kabhi sham dhale. Notable also is the violin duet between Tina and Vikram.
