Women´s Groups Come To Help Koirala

By: Planet Bollywood Special Correspondant
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the Mumbai High Court on Thursday granted a stay on her film “Ek Chhotisi Love Story”, allegedly portraying her in “obscene and vulgar” way, various women and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have decided to take up the cause of beleaguered Bollywood actress, Manisha Koirala’s case.

Finally buoyed by at yesterday’s victory in the court, a confident Koirala was today all set to meet top Delhi-based women activists and NGOs to garner support in her fight against producer Shashilal Nair over her alleged `obscene’ portrayal in his movie.

The National Commission for Women (NCW), whom a beleaguered star had approached for support on Wednesday, has invited around 30 women’s NGOs to discuss the issue, which Manisha says involves her reputation and image. The actress contends that if the movie is allowed to be released in its present form it will portray her in a very obscene manner

Manisha will be personally pleading her case before these NGOs and their representatives, prominent among them being Brinda Karat of All India Democratic Women’s Association, Jyotsana Chatterjee of Joint Action Women Front, the Centre for Social Research, Mahila Dakshta Samiti, MARG and YWCA.

It is worth recalling that the controversy revolves around the actresses’ plea for deletion of ‘obscene and vulgar shots’ on her body-double in the movie, which has now been stayed by the a bench of the Mumbai High Court till October 5. The film was due for release across the country on September 6.

Manisha has been seeking deletions of these shot filmed on Choksi Jessica, Koirala´s body double in the movie, claiming that it will spoil her image and further alleging the whole controversy was a publicity stunt.

After a lower court had refused to stay the film last week, the Bollywood star had moved the high court, while simultaneously approaching the NCW for its intervention. An agonised Manisha had urged the full NCW, led by its chairperson Purnima Advani, to “protect my rights as an actress and as a woman.”

Advani had agreed with Manisha that some shots of the movie, as was evident from the posters, “lowered the dignity of women.” Backing the actress’ case, the NCW had unequivocally condemned the `indecent exposure’, flaying it as “atrocious.” Advani had assured Manisha that NCW would take up the matter under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

The movie is advertised as starting today (sept.6th) at my local theater;

I was reading it has been held up by the courts for further review after those promo photos were published.

I called the theater and they said it won't be showing as the print hasn't arrived.

Guys i cant understand what the whole fuss is all about. Manisha is one actress who doesnt have any films in her kitty ( and yeah it is right the reason being she is fat and oevrweight).. So if this film indeed becomes a hit it may even help her career. As for the "nude" scenes, I am surprised she decided so late to cry WOLF at the director :) ( any conspiracy theory here ? )
